Grilled Doughnuts, Better Than Regular Doughnuts

20081115-grilleddonuts.jpg

Uh, best idea ever? Photograph from That's What You Think

Winnie of That's What You Think discovers the deliciousness of grilled doughnuts when she picks up a jelly doughnut and an eclair from Peter Pan Bakery in Brooklyn on the way to a backyard barbecue. How did they turn out?

The exterior becomes a crispy hot shell that gives way to juicy, molten insides and takes on the slightest hint of smoke and maybe just the faintest little happy leavings of whatever sausages (from the Polish butchers up the street) and steaks (from the Greenmarket) had just vacated the grill real estate.

Mm, meat-tinged doughnuts. I'm there.

Erm...no thanks, dont think this is for me

The secret to great grilled donuts is to marinade them over night, I prefer a Jamaican jerk style marinade, other prefer a soy based one.

Grilled donuts are addictive as hell. I don't like Krispy Kreme in general, but once you grill them you can't eat just one...

Krispy Kreme donuts heated up over a fire (a la toasting marshmallows) makes quite possibly the best and easiest camp breakfast ever.

Place I was at for lunch today has an amazingly delicious dessert: two grilled Krispy Kreme donuts topped with vanilla gelato, godiva chocolate sauce, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry. Most decadent sundae I have ever had. Definitely must be split with a few people.

Wow! I can't believe I never thought of this before. I grill quite often all year round, and one thing remains true, nothing tastes bad when coming off a grill.

I have got to get me some jelly donuts asap.

oh um.. I don't know what to make of this. It does remind me of my mom, though, who always says that food tastes better when it's warmed up..

OMG, I can't believe someone OTHER than my friend has done this!! He said they were amazing...

I despair of today's tastebuds. Really.
