Does Your Grocery Store Have You Crying Tears of Joy?

Not the Wegmans in question, but probably just as awesome nonetheless.
In some ways, I can totally relate to this woman. Because, even though I've only been exposed to Wegmans a couple dozen times—and all very briefly—I love the place.
One of my sons said, “Mom, are you really crying about this?” My daughter buried her head. I knew that (1) I was a complete loser, (2) I will forever love everything that reminds me of my hometown, and (3) I will always have a thing for Wegmans. My fellow flat-A-accented upstate friends understood: Something we all grew up with had moved in next door and now was everyone’s.
Wegmans is a chain of grocery stores that started in Rochester, New York, and that now has locations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. It's completely amazing—great prepared food, good produce, a gigantic selection of groceries, health and beauty supplies, organic stuff, and various and sundry.
We didn't have anything close to it in my hometown. But how 'bout you? Do you have a local grocery store that you've sworn undying loyalty to?

yes, yes, I do... it's name is Wegmans!!!! While I can't say it's ever made me cry, it does make me smile an awful lot, every Saturday when I shop there.
I don't know if it's good or bad that it's 20 miles away from my house.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right?
I heart Wegmans!

I swear by Wegmans also. It's so much better than Shop-rite in so many ways: friendlier staff, better selection of foods, even price-wise, it can be cheaper. Plus, the liquor store is attached - one-stop shopping.
I can't leave Wegmans without buying one type of cheese - I love the Cheese Shop!

I have a sentimental attachment to supermarkets that were distinct to places that I've lived. I heart Trader Joe's, but paradoxically, I also have a soft spot for Wal-Mart Supercenters (crazy, I know :)).

Whoa, is this the wegmans in Dewitt near Syracuse?? It looks like it.. mostly by the snow on the ground, haha
luxie at 10:36PM on 11/11/08
Hubby used to go with his parents to the one in Erie, PA - an hour's drive. We have friends who live near one, and it was one of the things they tempted us with when we were talking about visiting. If only they would open one near me!

Stew Leonards, the world's largest dairy market!!! There are only a few of these stores, mostly in Connecticut, but they are GREAT!

@luxie: It's the Ithaca, New York, Wegmans! The GF and I stay in a motel near it when we visit her sister, and we end up making any excuse to visit the store.

This post reminds me of the things that are in our backyard, and we take for granted. I grew up with Wegmans, it originated here in WNY. I love Wegmans. It does have competition in this area, Tops Markets, but it's like apples & oranges. It has become my weekly shopping stop. If you have a chance to get to Wegmans soon, try their Apple Cider Raisin bread from the bakery dept. They usually only have it til the end of Nov....it is out of this world! I love it toasted, and also as grilled cheese w/any of the cheddars from their cheese dept. Like @fatitalianbroad, I never leave there without something from their cheese dept. I've decided to try a new cheese each time I go and begin a cheese journal....
I heart Wegmans too....funny how emotional a family grocery store can make all of us...because that is truly what it is...a family owned & operated grocery store.

The amazing food opportunities in the Boston area are keeping me from moving to Europe. I have been known to weep a little bit when visiting Russo's in Watertown, MA. It's more of a farmstand/gourmet food shop than a grocery store, but it's got an unrivaled cheese section, great breads, fresh veggies & fruits and chin-dropping prepared foods.

Mando's Produce, Doniphan Drive, El Paso, TX.
100% family run.
He used to have a small crowded place but he finally moved "up" and has a place with a meat market and butchers who cut to order. Aguas on Saturday. A hot line with chiles, posole and menudo.
He's half the price of the nearby chain grocery store, so I go there first with my shopping list and then finish up in the "yuppie store."
His prices can't be beat and the company is good.
TikiPundit at 10:59PM on 11/11/08
I second the vote for Stew Leonard's. It's not exactly local to me, but I stop at the one in Yonkers, NY whenever I'm heading back Upstate from New York City. There are only four stores (the other three are in Connecticut), which is my only complaint. The result is that at most times the place is a total madhouse. But it's totally worth it.
I've only had the pleasure of Wegman's once. Sadly, I don't visit western New York often.
kurteye at 11:02PM on 11/11/08
I love Wegmans and lucky enough to live just right opposite them. I will shop for everything there every week. The meat is a bit expensive than other supermarket but I don't mind as I know I will get the best quality.

Central Market in Houston is a most wonderful place. Everything you could want in a grocery store. From incredible meats to the produce to the bakery . . . ah the bakery. My favorite part is their sandwich line. You can choose from hot and cold selections prepared in front of you on fresh-baked bread. You can also pick any of the toppings available to add at no extra charge. I'm a big fan of the marinated mushrooms and red bell peppers. The portions are huge for about $8. I have them cut if into four pieces so I can take them home and wrap them separately. That's four nice $2 meals - especially if you pair them with something else. I regret that I have to move soon to another state. Central Market, you will be missed.
cdsamford at 11:29PM on 11/11/08
So where do my sisters want to go when they come out to see me - NYC?Niagara Falls? 1,000 Islands? No, it's WEGMANS! Brick oven bakery, sushi rolls, large deli, chinese food, subs AND a play room for the kids while you shop. I frequent the cheese shop and olive bar when I need some mommy time.
yankeesgal at 11:30PM on 11/11/08
@luxie ~ I thought it was the Dewitt/Fayetteville Wegman's too - for the same reason - snow. They rebuilt that store several times in the same shopping center, getting bigger and better each time. My parents lived a few minutes away. When I visited from NJ or PA, I always stocked up before I came home. To this day, no other grocery store has come close to comparison. Mom used to shop at Price Chopper in Dewitt when she wanted only a few items or had some good coupons, but everything else was from Wegman's. I wondered how much my spending would increase if I shopped there regularly - it was a wonderland!
PerkyMac at 11:31PM on 11/11/08
I visited my first Wegmans last month (Woodbridge, NJ) and was most definitely impressed. But then, all it it took was the big spacious row of self-serve-and-weigh bulk food to wow me. You just don't see that in Brooklyn. But they lost points when I was unable to find plastic-wrapped polenta in a tube and corn tortillas in the entire store. Why no love for corn products?
I grew up with Fred Meyer and they will always be my favorite. No finer one stop shopping.
Krista at 11:53PM on 11/11/08
Heee, I just made one of my handful-of-times-a-year pilgrimages to Wegman's this past weekend! The Dewitt/Fayettville branch, no less. I was hoping to get down there a little closer to Thanksgiving, but alas, it's tough to find a weekend with room for a two-and-a-half hour drive to a grocery store. Worth the drive, though, and worth the insane amount of money I spent. If only we'd get one in the North Country!
I definitely need to send that article to my mother and sisters. It speaks to me, heh.
justjoan at 11:55PM on 11/11/08
Does Waldbaum's still exist? It was a chain of supermarkets on Long Island when I was growing up and we bought everything from there. The boxes would give "Julia Waldbaum's: recipes and tipes--supposedly she was a realperson who had married the Mr. Waldbaum who started the store. Mom always swore her eldest sister Dorothy could have married Mr. Waldbaum if she had wanted to.
I loved this store because I grew up in it, but I always get a little teary when I come across a store which has a quietly "Jewish" air about it--pickles in barrels, lots of "appetizing", a full line of kosher products during Passover. Food Emporium in Manhattan is like this. Reminds me of home.
annien at 12:01AM on 11/12/08
I make at least one visit to the Wegman's in State College, PA when I go to Penn State games. Amazing place. In Dayton, Ohio, we have our local small chain of the Dorothy Lane Market that is a smaller version. Great butcher, seafood, and wine selection, along with the prepared foods for when I'm a bit lazy.

If anybody is ever in the bay area, you MUST check out the Berkeley Bowl Marketplace on Shattuck in Berkeley. HUGE variety of organic produce, reusable grocery bags, bicycles, and people in sandals. DO IT.

In Northern california there's a chain of stores called the Nugget Market. i love love love it. They have a wide variety of prepared foods, gourmet ingredients and a huge selection of cheeses.
if you're ever in the area, you should stop by one

I lived in the Northeast for 23 years and then moved to Texas. I like Wegmans alright, but Central Markets have them beat in a majority of areas. CM has a much better produce department, meat and seafood counters, and bulk food section. And while CM ain't perfect at bread, Wegams' bread selection just isn't up to par. Wegmans is better at cheese and the general grocery area, but I'd still take CM over Wegmans.
lawofmurphy at 12:36AM on 11/12/08
The Dewitt Wegman's is the most amazing place on earth. It's open 24 hours and has anything a Syracuse University student could need at 3am.
Also, I'm fortunate enough to pass Stew Leonard's on my drive home from Syracuse to Long Island and it is almost equally as amazing.

I moved from Columbia, MO and St. Louis to Chicago about a year ago. St. Louis is a strange place to grocery shop because it is a very colliquial place. We have a couple of chains that are all over the place, but none of the big national chains - I had never seen a Kroger until I went to college, or a Safeway until I moved to Chicago. Dierbergs and Schnucks are still, in my mind, everything a grocery store should be: lots of local vegetables in the summer, lots of local food lines, and people who work at those stores their entire lives.
I despise Chicago grocery shopping, and Dominick's and Jewel. Whole Foods is special treat shopping, but I try to do lots of shopping at Woodman's, which is a veritable Mecca of grocery shopping. It really is everything a grocery store should be.

Wegmans is the only place in New Jersey where I can get Hofmann's, Zweigles, and Sahlens; 3 of the very best frankfurters in the country!
hotdoglover at 6:18AM on 11/12/08
AH I MISS WEGMANS! College was awesome because of their hot food section. I have no idea how much I would've saved by going to Walmart but pshhhhh who cares
I was looking at a survey on MSNBC that listed the top 10-20 healthiest grocery chains and Wegman's didn't make it...how??
machellebelle at 6:40AM on 11/12/08
Wegmans is definitely the "tears of joy" grocery store on my list. Sadly, it's 20 minutes away from where I now live. It's hard to justify the additional gas expense when two (2!) giant food stores are within a few miles from me.
The Wegmans organic 3-seed wheat bread I still have cravings for!
Eaterino at 7:29AM on 11/12/08
I'm a die-hard city girl but then I went upstate for college to Buffalo. To this day the one thing that really makes me reconsider life in the 'burbs is the possibility of shopping weekly at a Wegmans (Tops was also great but only the International Tops). Yes, I know - I'm a little pathetic...
linghuey at 7:33AM on 11/12/08
my parents swear by wegmans in NJ. i'm down in texas and we have central market which is incredible. over 500 types of cheese and at least 25 types of olives.
my father now even has a product that wegmans started to carry. a seltzer called Bariloche....so break out the egg creams!

Publix... best grocery store ever.
dagny at 8:08AM on 11/12/08
i miss the Mars store near where I used to live in Baltimore. however, when i was in Baltimore, i missed Publix and the commercials they'd play on tv during the holidays.
french tart at 8:18AM on 11/12/08
Oh man, someone beat me to the Publix praise. I swear, there is no grocery store like it. Not only is their produce selection fantastic, but their store brand is sometimes superior to the name brand. Oh, and seriously, their Publix Deli Subs are the glorious antidote to a horrible day. Oh, and recently they started putting in a couple of "Gourmet Publix" in the Florida area and it was like green-hued HEAVEN. I actually jump for joy and giggle like a mental patient when I know I get to go there. Since Publix is only located in the Southeast (Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee), the many friends I have had that moved out of their range actually cry out with pangs of loss. Whenever they come back to visit, no matter what the urgency, they HAVE to stop at Publix for a sub before moving on. I actually have plans to leave Publix's area of influence in the near future and nearly everyday my boyfriend must assure me that I will find another grocery store to love, even if its not Publix. I'm completely sad, I know, but they are just that good.
bluberryfields3 at 8:21AM on 11/12/08
@Krista - next time you're in Wegmans, look for the polenta in the organic section...I know I've seen the tubes of Melissa's in our Wegmans. I think they have corn tortillas in the Mexican section....they carry the shelf stable kind....maybe they were out the day you went?
I know...I'm a supermarket junkie....I've had people stop me in my local market to ask where things were when the stock person couldn't find them..it's a curse! lol

Anyone from the Hudson Valley?
I love Adam's Fairacre Farms. I miss it.
But being in WNY, at least I can always go to Wegman's.

Wegman's rules. Crushes Whole Foods. NYC is waiting!
bobbob at 9:00AM on 11/12/08
I wish wish wish I lived near a Wegman's. I second that, bobbob!
I love the Fairway in Red Hook, Brooklyn. As far as grocery stores in New York City go, it's pretty awesome.. and you can eat/drink at their cafe and sit out on the water looking at the Statue of Liberty. Not too shabby.
Laurel E at 9:16AM on 11/12/08
@lawofmurphy..... As a person who also moved from the Northeast to Texas and now has to shot at Central Market I must say it sounds like you have never been to the Dewitt Wegmans. I agree that there are smaller Wegmans that lack in the selection of produce and breads compared to Central Market, but the Dewitt Wegmans is by far the most superior grocery experience I have been to in America. The Central Markets in Austin are the best grocery stores I can expect to find in central Texas, and in my opinion they lack the selection and quality of produce as well as the bread offerings compared to the Dewitt Wegmans. I have been so so sad to have to shop here in Texas because there is a lack of everything no matter where I try to shop. If only Wegmans would open a store in Austin!
ewiggin at 9:23AM on 11/12/08
Wegman's is just amazing. That said, the Giant Eagle chain in Pittsburgh is doing a fine job of imititating it with their Market District stores--they aren't AS good as Wegman's but they are darned close...my BF lives in a neighborhood where the Giant Eagle is less than stellar and when we were shopping at my Market District the other day he said "your store has a live jazz band--mine has metal detectors"
mnrobb at 9:23AM on 11/12/08
When I lived in Poughkeepsie, I used to love going to Adam's Fairacre Market. They had wonderful gourmet products, fresh produce, and all at decent prices. Alas...
wanderingfoodie at 9:34AM on 11/12/08
@krista & @downhillguru: I still have a soft spot for Fred Meyer from when I lived in Oregon. I still have that damn jingle stuck in my head whenever I think of the place. Loved the hypermart format, and depending on the Freddy's, it might have a decent prepared foods section.
And Publix -- When my parents lived in Florida and I went to the Publix with them, I remember it having a similar feel to Wegman's. Publix seemed pretty great, too.

A friend of mine dressed up for Halloween as, you guessed it, Weg Man.
Amazing.
shoneyjoe at 9:44AM on 11/12/08
I have the UWS Fairway about 100 steps from my apartment. No place I'd rather get my daily (artisinal) bread.
I have some Wegmans experience from Jersey Shore summers - it is pretty great place once you figure out where everything is!
harrison at 9:51AM on 11/12/08
I love Wegmans as well, but I'm really disappointed by their meat selection 99% of the time. At least the one I go to never seems to have anything beyond ground beef and vacuum-packed chicken breasts/pork chops/steaks. Ground pork? Nope. Pork butt? Nope. Odd cut of beef (and by odd, I mean something common like skirt steak)? Only in packs that are so small I have to buy 4 or 5 to get enough for a meal and a day or two of leftovers. Maybe I just have bad timing (I tend to food shop late at night).
My favorite of all time is the H-Mart I used to live near (and still drive the 30 minutes to occasionally). Besides the Asian ingredients I can't find anywhere else, their produce is obscenely fresh, and their fish and meat selection is great - the last time I was their I bought 5 or 6 pounds of beef short ribs that were meaty, fatty and beautiful - and about half the price of the anemic ribs in my local supermarket.
stratusgd at 9:57AM on 11/12/08
Central Market, no doubt. As a Texan stuck in central NY, I can say it beats Wegmans every day of the week. I've been to the Dewitt, Rochester, Ithaca, and other Wegmans, and it's no contest. Wegmans has a bigger standard grocery area...but it's no better than a standard grocery store, really. CM has incredible meat, seafood, cheese, produce, bulk section, salad/olive bar. I miss it :(
BTW, what's up with the new 1940s-ish logo Wegmans is reviving? Fugly!
ryansm at 9:58AM on 11/12/08
@ewiggin
Well, that may be true. I haven't been to the Dewitt Wegmans. The Wegmans I went to most often (which, again, is a fine store, don't get me wrong) was in South Jersey. But I still stand by my statement that the average CM is better than the average Wegmans.
I wish I could help with finding better bread in Austin (I'm a bread snob), but I dunno if I can. I actually have a friend of a friend who makes (or at least USED to make) bread (I think he uses the Reinhart retardation rise technique) in Austin, but I don't really know if he's still around. I'm actually in Dallas...I get my bread from Eatzi's. They make some good loaves.
lawofmurphy at 10:01AM on 11/12/08
@lawofmurphy - Eatzie's is amazing!! I always pop in there when I go to Dallas
@ewiggin - have you tried Mandola's for your bread selection? It's a little family-run business with two locations in the Austin area. They bake hundreds of kinds fresh every day, and if you get there around closing time, they'll give it to you for free!! (life-saver in college)

@Adam Kuban Cool Pic, Ithaca Wegmans is Nice!

I love Wegmans, Fresh Market, Trader Joe's and local farm markets. The Wegmans I go to in Hunt Valley MD is surrounded by great shopping. When I am coming home from Baltimore every other week I stop and grab some great stuff.
I also go to Shop Rite and Costco often.
I like Publix when we are in FL. Fresh Market, Harris Teeter or Lowe's when we are in NC.
I have to give credit to the many local Farm markets and produce markets I go to in MD, DE, PA and NJ. Some of the best produce I ever get is at these markets.
Recently Wegmans went public with an initiative to lower their prices inspite of the economic downturn http://www.wegmans.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/HomepageView?storeId=10052&catalogId=10002&langId=-1
I thought this was a bold and brilliant move on their part. When we are shopping at these great specialty grocery stores we never assume we will get good buys and often at Wegmans I find them. Great priced items.
So To Danny and Colleen Wegman I have to say thanks.
JerzeeTomato at 10:31AM on 11/12/08
Definitely Wegmans. Growing up in southcentral PA, Giant was my favorite grocery store but now that I live so close to Wegmans, I certainly have a new favorite now. Not only is it close and convenient, I've found that their prices are much better than the other closest store, which is Giant of MD.
Interestingly, Giant of PA are known as Martin's in MD, but these are not associated with the Giant normally found in MD. You can tell from the logos that they are different since the PA variety have an red-orange font, while the MD stores have blue font with a big G.

darth_kittius at 11:36AM on 11/12/08
I definitely agree with everyone who said Central Market. It is the best grocery store, ever. Their selection of cheeses is so huge it's overwhelming. Same goes for produce. And wine. And deli meats. And prepared food, etc etc. I could spend 2+ hours in there, just browsing.
yumSoup at 11:39AM on 11/12/08
PUBLIX!!! They came to Atlanta when I was there in the 90s and I was joyful. Then I moved to Tennessee and was stuck with the dreadful Kroger again. Recently, Publix has built FOUR stores in my town. JOY!!! I haven't been forced to run the surly smoker gauntlet to get into Kroger since.

I love Wegmans... specifically this very Ithaca NY Wegmans which was a huge part of my undergrad experience! I recognized it right away from the picture. I also have a soft spot for Trader Joe's.
Sadly, I now live in Toronto where there is neither Weggies nor TJ's (cries).

when i lived in fairfax, va, i was surrounded by whole foods, wegmans, and super h-mart (yes, super). they were all within 5 minutes from my apartment. it was a glorious time for grocery shopping.
in august, i moved to alexandria and i'm 5 minutes away from harris teeter, trader joes, and grand mart. while i love harris teeter and the odd thing here and there from trader joes, i certainly do miss my old digs. unlike most people, i dislike trader joes and my disdain for trader joes has grown after each thing i discover. i concede that they make awesome strawberry lemonade, green tea mochi, and i enjoy the niman ranch bacon that they carry.

Wegmans is great. It's truly what a "Super" market should be, not just a big place with shelves and shelves of junk.
Try their seasoned hamburgers. Cooked right, they rival the best restaurant burgers you can find.

New Seasons Markets in the Portland, OR. area are the best around these parts.
TitoBlanco at 2:17PM on 11/12/08
I LOVE Wegmans so much that I actually put it on the list of places to take out-of-state visitors. Seriously. And I've taken several people there as a tourist attraction and no one's ever been disappointed - it's AMAZING!
BRash at 2:26PM on 11/12/08
The New Seasons chain in and around the Portland, OR area. They emphasize relationships with local farmers; color code their seafood according to how sustainable the practices were to make it available; offer full benefits to their employees - even their part-time workers; have great tastings of fresh produce every weekend; offer free wellness classes and one-on-one meetings with nutritionists; give out small cups of free coffee and some snacks when you shop after work; and are one of the few places around here to emphasize local, organic food while also providing mass-produced options, like Doritos or Lean Cuisine.
And they're really nice, too!

Wegmans is still awesome, of course. Also a fan of Adams Fairacre Farms, although I've only been there once.

my love for trader joes is bordering on abnormal. i would be crushed if i moved somewhere that didn't have it and had to go to a *gasp* normal supermarket.

Fairway in Red Hook, Brooklyn. It's the best the city has to offer.

I do I do I do cry over wegmans.... I just left Ithaca NY for Houston, and NONE of (even the fanciest) grocery stores compare. It is truly one of the things I miss most at home! Miss it miss it miss it!
Elizabelle at 5:40PM on 11/12/08
@luxie - I thought it was the Dewitt Wegman's too! And for the same reason, the snow on the ground ;} I miss Wegman's terribly. I live in Austin now, with the Whole Foods world headquarters downtown and Central Market about two miles from my house, and I have to say, shopping at both reminds me how much Wegman's really is just the most amazing grocery store ever. *wistful sigh* I make sure to stop by for a sub and some browsing every time I'm back in the area! Elizabelle, I'm with you.. we transplants need 'I Heart Weggies" buttons or something down here.
myzkyti at 6:23PM on 11/12/08
I have nto seen one in southeastern Va., but we had a Kroger close down near me, so there is room for a Wegmans. Bring it on!!
Raiders757 at 7:12PM on 11/12/08
Oh wow, this post really did make me tear up. I'm originally from Jamestown, NY and have never lived more than 10 minutes away from Wegmans. I thought I appreciated the amazing produce and vegetarian selection then, but then i moved down south to Norfolk, VA. Just far enough south that we're out of the Wegman's range. Nothing down here is even close in comparison, and the vegetarian selection is terrible. I would give anything to have Wegman's produce again!
CassieRose at 7:22PM on 11/12/08
It's funny... after really reading this thread, I see a lot of Texas vs. NY going on. Cool. I will always give first loyalty and love to Wegmans, but I will admit that Central Market has A lot going for it! Breads and deli are incredible.

Fairway, Plainview (Long Island) and Stew Leonard's (Norwalk is the best but Yonkers will do)

I absolutely love Harris Teeter (NC). Sometimes I go there when I'm depressed because it just makes me so happy.

Wegman's is by far my favorite store. It's a bit of a drive though, which became a consideration when the gas prices were sky high. My former spouse actually did a chart to show that Wegman's was the cheapest store around Fairfax County for a list of groceries she had from a recent shop. With gas added in, it came to the same price as the nearby Giant stores.
But Wegman's has all the cool stuff. The butcher shop ribeyes are the best I've ever consumed. They have Fever Tree mixers too (but always seem to be out of the Tonic Water). And, where else can one find Spiedie marinade below the Mason Dixon line?
I too remember Adams Fairacre Farms, but in Kingston, NY, where I grew up.
Tonecat at 10:14PM on 11/12/08
I can't believe how many people adore Wegmans as much as I do! Love their prices, their cheese chop, the gourmet chocolate (which is always at my local store) and now, the new gourmet beer shop. And best of all? If I can't find find what I need at the meat department, they will order it and prepare it to my specifications. Our other local grocery store, Tops, just doesn't compare.
LaurenM at 9:33AM on 11/13/08
I love Wegmans. My latest love is their peppadew cheddar cheese dip/spread. They also treat their employees really well--they've been on Fortune's Top Best 100 Companies to Work For, actually placing #1 in 2005, #2 in 2006, and #3 in 2007 and 2008.
dhorst at 11:32AM on 11/13/08
Yes, Wegmans and Central Market are the best. Safeway?!? Are you kidding me? I grew up down the block from a Safeway. It's fine, but it's no Wegmans.
NYminknit at 2:35PM on 11/13/08
There's a fabulous grocery store in the Chicago neighborhood of Hyde Park (aka, Barack Obama's neighborhood, and also home to the University of Chicago) called Hyde Park Produce. The prices are great, and the produce is always super fresh. They stock lots of really interesting ethnic foods as well, plus breads from the Medici and other local bakeries. The deli counter is great too, with lots of good cheeses and humongous pickles. Best of all, everyone who works there always seems happy to be there and to be helping customers. You can't count on them having everything you need, but they're still the best in my book!

Wegman's is one of the only reasons I'm sorry I moved away from Syracuse years ago (the other is the New York State Fair!). There's nothing like it in Brooklyn.
SavtaShayna at 5:12PM on 11/13/08
I have actually visited the Ithaca Wegmans and I must say it was very nice. We are very lucky on the east side of Cincinnati to have one of the largest Kroger in the nation. It is something of a prototype that has everything you can imagine. The new Kroger concept called "fresh fare" will be opening soon in town and promises to be unbelievable. It is interesting to hear everyones take on their favorite grocery stores.
bearcat1996 at 7:33PM on 11/13/08
I have not cried tears of joy over a store, but am crying tears of despair after reading all these comments--realizing what we DON'T have here in Oklahoma--any decent grocery stores! Everyone here shops at Walmart. Don't even get me started. While we were in Santa Fe last month we visited the Whole Foods there and it was like being in wonderland. Our state and city movers and shakers constantly tout our area as being very progressive, but we can't even get a Whole Foods. And I had never even heard of Wegman's! I think I need to move : (
gourmetgal at 2:52AM on 11/14/08
While I do love Whole Foods -- for so many reasons, including their amazing commitment to humanely raised meats -- I am in love with my local grocery store chain, Market of Choice. We don't have a Whole Foods around here in Eugene, Oregon, and I do think that even if we did, I'd still go for Market of Choice. They're locally-owned, they have a similar kind of product quality and commitment to sustainability as Whole Foods, but they're a little cheaper. They have an amazing prepared foods section, salad bar, etc. I HEART my Market of Choice!
denaluna at 1:17AM on 11/15/08
I thought that was the Ithaca Wegmans...
I grew up shopping at Hy-Vee, the great Iowa/Midwestern grocery store and thought the newer ones were great. Then I met Wegmans in Ithaca...dear god! I've never met a grocery store more magical. I hate to jump on the Wegmans bandwagon, but there's a reason why so many people love it.
ElspethAdair at 11:44AM on 11/15/08
SO happy to see that others have mentioned the Berkeley Bowl! I just emailed a friend out there this morning, and said that the BB and the farmer's market at Lake Merritt are the only 2 reasons I wish my bro still lived out there.
Separate of the BB, I really do love me some Wegmans, even if they aren't close enough to my house to warrant regular trips. SIGH...

We have a Wegman's in Lakewood, NY...10 minutes from my home in Jamestown. I love Wegman's...there is an old world market atmosphere that you cannot find in any other large grocery store. Their breads, bagels, cheeses, and meats can't be beat. They have, by far, the freshest produce around, and use as many local farmers produce whenever seasonally available. Their ethnic food aisles contain just about anything you need to make any dish. They really train their employees well about all aspects of the areas they work in.
My daughter lived in Scottsdale, AZ for 4 years, (with every high end store and restaurant available to her), and after the birth of her first son, she and her husband decided to move back to WNY, and the first thing she said to me was..."I can't wait to go to Wegman's!!" I rest my case..lol

If you live in the California central valley, it has to be the Nugget. It's a small chain, family-owned. Not only do they have all the things you hope for in a great grocery store (great produce, wide cheese selection, fresh sushi, and a real butcher), but their customer service is GREAT. We moved to Davis, CA from San Francisco 8 years ago and I was worried about what we would find - we spend a lot of time cooking and my closest friend is a professional cook. So it was a relief to find the Nugget literally 2 minutes from our house. Finally, they are ranked 13th!!! on Forturne magazines best places to work list. I tell my kids (ages 4 and 8) that they should work there when they are old enough.
I know this sounds like a plug for the chain but I don't work there - I'm really just a loyal, loyal customer.

@sarahlynn - I'm from San Luis Obispo originally and now live in NYC, but my family are in Atascadero and Paso. Surely Trader Joe's in Templeton has kosher salt? That's a great TJs...so spacious compared to our little packed one in the city.
I'm not a big fan of grocery stores in general, though...recently I have cut my TJ's trips to every other week, as I'm buying more at the greenmarket and making more things myself. Though Wegmans does sound wonderful!

My store is the Geneseo Wegmans, but the brand new Wegs in Henrietta, NY is absolutely fantastic. They get better and better, and constantly strive to put out new, original products. A store brand Cherry Armagnac ice cream. A large line of different Extra Virgin Olive Oils. A great cheese shop and brick oven bakery...Fantastic. We have a Super Walmart right across the street where I know I could save a bunch of money...not worth it for me.
DaveRef at 7:59PM on 11/15/08
We have a Wegmans here and I absolutely LOVE it! Their corn chowder (serve yourself) is to die for and the meat selection is the best I've ever seen in any grocery store. I get a "menu" magazine from them every month with tons of great recipes and coupons. My only complaint is they can be kinda pricey, but the quality of everything is fantastic, so you get what you pay for.

Another vote for the Berkeley Bowl. It's like a bottomless pit of things I didn't even know I needed. Just last month I actually looked at the chilled case near the bulk food weigh station and discovered they stock almond meal. Last week I discovered rose petals! And don't get me started about the people who work at the bulk food weigh station. They can differentiate between identical beige powders perfectly every time, in a fraction of a second. But really, the reason we're here is THE PRODUCE. Added bonus: the whole store is so reasonably priced.

I live in Rochester and of course my allegiance is to Wegmans. Its one awesome store. The Wegmans grew up near to where I live. When I have lived away, in Phoenix and SC, I missed them so!

The hardest part of miving to Seattle wasn't leaving my family, it was the sad thought of living without a Wegmans. :-(

All the Wegmans in or near Buffalo, NY ROCK! I agree with another poster that the meat selection is often disappointing but everything else is a delight.

I discovered Wegmans in Buffalo, by accident! Working in the area at a trade show I went there to get real food for lunch. It was love at first sight. When I moved to Harrisburg, PA, I discovered Wegman's in Allentown. It was about an hours drive but I occasionally made it just to go to that wonderful store and that is where I discovered Lebanon Bologna O M G!!
Something that I haven't seen mentioned here about Wegman's is that it has for many years shown up as one of America's best places to work. The people really do love their jobs, I have had the opportunity to speak with them outside of their workplace and they love it as much as the consumers do.
I live 2 hours Southwest of Seattle now. So I am back in the land of Trader Joes and Everett's Food Emporium, but everything is so far away.
rvdebby at 10:24AM on 11/17/08
That's the Ithaca Wegmans! I miss it so much (I graduated in May) - now I'm in Dallas, TX and completely obsessed with Central Market! I go there almost every day and just wander around, tasting wines and cheeses..mmmm

Publix is the greatest store! I have recently moved from the Atlanta area to Minnesota. I absolutely cried when my husband took me to our nearest store. It's a Cub and you bag your own groceries. I miss my Publix people who would always walk my groceries out to the car and load them. I was pregnant at the time but I felt very well taken care of. I miss the subs!
We have Lund's here which has great fish and produce but they are much more expensive than Publix. Publix, please open a store in Bloomington, MN.

I'm an Adam's Fairacre Farms Newburgh, NY girl. love, love, love it. Their only competition would be Trader Joe's, an hour away in Danbury, CT!

Wow I would certainly try Wegmans if I could. Here in Colorado we only have Whole Foods which we call "Whole Paycheck" Do I need to tell you why ?

I have had the privilege of visiting a Wegmans in NJ and it was beautiful. It reminded me of my favorite grocery store on earth, Central Market, in Shoreline, WA, (pretty much Seattle) not Texas. The produce/meat department takes up what seems to be half of the store. Here's what I love about it: every veggie and fruit you could ask for, low prices, high quality, bulk foods, a wine expert, prosciutto you can read through, bins of clams and mussels, cheese, Japanese candy ... and toilet paper too.
If only I didn't now live three hours from it.
rochellefeil at 2:55PM on 11/17/08
Reading Terminal Market, Philadelphia. I only go to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's to fill in the pantry stock and get everything else at the market. It's fantastic.

Harris Teeter is a Wegman's "wannabe"... and I wish it was a "is-a-be". But here in Southern Delaware, it's the best thing since ... well, sliced ... you know.
And my wife works at Harris Teeter! We did visit the Wegmans in Hunt Valley MD on one of our "let's be a tourist" days. Wow. But for now, we're very happy Harris Teeter is in the area.
When will these "regional" stores realize they have fans everywhere. Blow a few $Mil on developing/opening a store and see what happens! (Are you listening Trader Joe's and In-and-Out Burger??!! Ooops.. wrong thread!
Go forth and shop and eat and consume! .Brian.

it's Whole Foods only for me.. no one beats them in quality and standards..
i know i can walk into any Whole Foods and no matter what i pick up, i know it's been reviewed and approved to not contain anything artificial and no artificial trans fats.. and i know that any animal products there were produced humanely, no antibiotics, hormones, animal byproducts, fed all vegetarian diets.. it's just nice peace of mind to shop in a place like that, they actually care about what they're selling you
not to mention the great customer service.. they go above and beyond compared to other grocers to help and satisfy the customers
and as long as you're able to restrain from throwing a bunch of the more extravagent items they offer and just shop as you would if you were in a regular grocery store, you can find plenty of great value.. love Whole Foods

I lived in Rochester for a couple of years, and it's Wegman's that I miss the most. There are few other places like it, though Harry's in Atlanta comes pretty close.

I work at the Home Depot across the street from the Wegmans' in Downingtown, PA, and have been eating lunch or dinner there for the past three years. My only disappointment during all that time was once I had some rotisserie chicken that was a little dry ... Try the Lobster Bisque, it is amazing !!!

I feel like somehow i've been living on another planet, one without a Wegman's. I've never even heard of it. Here in Michigan, we have Meijers and I love it!! The one in my neighborhood has the most wonderful produce department of any store in the county. I am a fresh fruit and veggie addict, and when I go to Meijers, everyone working in the produce knows me by name and they never fail to wave and say hi. I have been a faithful shopper there since they opened about twenty years ago. I buy very little at deli's but it's a nice one. For the best deal on canned goods tho, I go to Aldi and save at least half of what I would spend at any other store. Clean store with wide aisles and a good selection at 39¢ to 89¢ a can, and a GREAT frozen section. I do buy some veggies there too because it is quality and quantity all at a low price. But Meijers? I would cry big tears if they closed up.

While Wegman's is a great grocery store, I find my local Super Fresh to be No 1 for customer service, bar none.
When they were recently out of whole fryers at 69 cents, (can't beat that), the meat cutter went back to the deli counter and pull out a fryer from the refrigerator and wrapped and priced it for me. That was the best tasting fryer I have ever eaten.
It's the little things like store prepared gourmet apple pies, fresh from The Farm produce, (their potatoes are the best tasting ever), seafood, and my all time favorite tasting beef, Premium Gold Angus.
For a supermarket that has been business now for 150 years, its all about the quality, value and customer service.

I heart Shop-rite - from Jersey, Shop-rite every Saturday from earliest memory. Good times : ) When the one nearby shut down, my dad elected to drive to the nearest one, which is about 5 miles further, instead of go to other supermarkets.
At school in upstate NY - Wegmans rocks - can't get McVittles anywhere else, or kumquats...

I guess I"m a late poster - but when we lived in MN, Kowalski's is the absolute bomb. Unbelievable selection, best produce, meat & cheese, great service, their deli was awesome - and they were open 24 hours.
I'm back in FL now, so Publix is #1, with Sweetbay running a close second. The butcher at Publix deboned our duck, chicken and goose for Thanksgiving for FREE.
