Cool Blog Alert: 'Second Rate Snacks'
I love the idea of this blog—comparing a popular foodstuff to a similar but (sometimes) lesser-loved version. With voting for the superior snack.
On that note, when am I getting my Hostess Pie?

Cheez-nips are usually cheaper than Cheez-its, and so I stupidly thought my little girl (then 5 years old) would not be able to tell the difference if I substituted what I thought was an almost exact but cheaper replica of her fave snack, Cheez-its. After finding day after day her packed snack baggie of Cheez-nips unopened and uneatened, I asked her what was up. She said, "Those are yucky." I said, "What do you mean, you love Cheez-its!" She looked at me and said, "THOSE are NOT Cheez-its!" I challenged her to a blind taste test...putting both before her on a napkin to see if she could really tell which was which. Time after time she identified them correctly, stating over and over again that Cheez-its "just taste better, Mama." She's a foodie thru and thru, even at a very young age. There is no fooling her sensitive and discerning palate!

i agree with your kid -- cheese nips are as disgusting as cheez-its are delicious.

My Mom used to buy the "generic equivalent" of the "good stuff" all the time, thinking my brother and I wouldn't notice. It was usually junk food, like the knock-off store brand version of Doritos, Hostess Ho-Hos or Cheerios. You get the idea. When we called our Mom out on the Bait and Switch she'd say, "What? Look at the picture on the box. It's the same. You like these." Yeah right, Mom.

Cheez-Its are excellent. Cheese Nips have a terrible taste.
