Breakfast Burritos in California

Photograph from Kevin Lawver on Flickr
Most Californians probably aren't awake yet, but when they rise, I hope something like this is waiting for them. Breakfast burritos are as West Coast as the vineyards and wheat grass. Growing up there, I had no clue that in other states, people didn't eat a massive hunk of food the size of Hulk's arm before noon. It just seemed so normal.

I do not like "breakfast" foods. Even the beauty of this burrito won't sway me.

You eat a lot of breakfast burritos or tacos growing up in Texas (still do). Now they weren't as big as that one usually. That thing is huge!

i don't like any other breakfast foods outside of breakfast burritos! (and of course Sunday brunch foods)
growing up in California, then moving to Texas has allowed me to be privileged with these my whole life. But seriously...that thing is a monster.

Never ate breakfast burritos growing up in Cali (Central Coast), but breakfast tacos have always been a part of my visits to Texas.

What's in a breakfast burrito?
Jilly at 9:13AM on 11/07/08
Yeah, sure that thing is a monster. But once you start eating it, width, length and girth, are the farthest things from your mind!
(I grew up in cali too....)

During a short trip to the LA area, my cousins treated me to the best breakfast burrito of my life from a little place in Burbank. I dream about that burrito constantly. It was wonderful.

Oh, this makes me weep. Lived in California for a short but very well-fed time. So jealous!

I love breakfast burritos! There was this tiny place by where I went to school that had the most delicious breakfast burritos (full of scrambled eggs, hash browns, hot salsa, cheddar cheese, and black beans) and fresh-squeezed orange juice. How I miss it. The Qdoba breakfast burritos are good in a pinch.

holy cow, that thing is huge...
foodinmouth at 10:13AM on 11/07/08
hmm... i can dream for hours about what might be wrapped inside that lovely tortilla... Breakfast burritos are the only way I'm ever near breakfast foods.

once a week i make breakfast burritos and put them in the fridge for easy breakfast on the way to work, my husband loves them and it's cheaper than buying breakfast out!
sfred at 10:58AM on 11/07/08
@Jilly: Usually scrambled eggs, hashed browns, onions, peppers, salsa and melted cheese. Chorizo and/or beans too! The one in the photo is especially monstrous.

That looks absolutely delicious!!! I want one now!!!
MollieBeth at 11:01AM on 11/07/08
Erin, you just jogged my memory of the best breakfast burritos EVER. The problem is, I can't remember if I had it in Colorado or California! But they looked JUST LIKE that picture. Oh the hunger! Once again, I am forced to cry because NYC lacks easy access to delicious Mexican dishes (I know there are places, but most are way over priced like Bonita, or they are in Washington Heights area, a long trek for this Brooklyn gal).

We do a lot of breakfast burritos in Colorado too, though nothing quite that big. Unfortunately, I've largely cut them out of my diet due to calorie concerns. My favorite: scrambled eggs, peasant-style potatoes, chorizo, onions, peppers, & green chile. YUM!

In Seattle there's a place called Gordito's that has a picture by the register with a picture of a baby next to a burrito. They're the same size. Under the baby it says "priceless" and under the burrito it says "$5.99" or thereabouts, whatever the price is these days. It's a thing of beauty. Just like this breakfast burrito.

I'm clearly the oddball out when it comes to this. While I have a life-long aversion to eggs (except I love quiche for some reason), the thought of anything savory in the a.m. makes me want to toss my cookies. Well, I can make an exception for hashbrowns & cheese...
gtchick at 12:56PM on 11/07/08
The breakfast burrito is the perfect food. Portable, filling, and delicious!
Nellbie at 1:16PM on 11/07/08
They sell breakfast burritos all day at the 24 hour Mexican drive-thrus here in Tucson. Love them, and they're from $2.95 to $4, depending on where you go and what you get in them. Most come with refried beans/potatoes, cheese, scrambled eggs, and your choice of meats: chorizo, machaca, bacon, or ham.
missvenuz at 1:21PM on 11/07/08
@missvenuz -- That is so unfair! This is my biggest gripe with NYC--lack of cheap, tasty Mexican! And drive through burritos! ::sigh::
Linnea Covington at 1:52PM on 11/07/08
Snort. And I thought Californians ate healthy!
But I have eaten at La Bamba in Columbus where the burritos are as big as your head. But they have no breakfast burritos.
bytehead at 1:54PM on 11/07/08
That there is a gut grenade.
danhhoang at 2:15PM on 11/07/08
@Linnea -- well, I have an extra room in my house for rent: $350/month and 1/4 utilities...and I'm within walking distance of a 24 hour Mexican joint... :-P

check out the Carl's Jr. line of breakfast burritos here http://www.carlsjr.com/menu/

I always get my massive breakfast burritos at Lucky Boy in Pasadena. They are the best and fill you up until dinner!

Don't really eat breakfast burritos in Texas... we eat breakfast *tacos*.
jayevee at 9:59PM on 11/07/08
Since I moved back from Cali I crave breaky burritos all the time, but for the life of me I cant find a decent place in NYC that sells em. All I end up with is soulless scrambled eggs in a cold 'wrap' with unripe avocado and ketchup =(
Anyone got any recommends?!
