Blogwatch: Culinary Fool's Maple Cream Cookies

20081110BLOGWATCHMapleCreamCookies.jpg

This time of year, it seems the leaves are falling into my path at every corner. There is one leaf, however, that—as I wade through puddles of red and crispy orange—I have yet to encounter.

Brenda Pederson of Culinary Fool blogs that elusive fall leaf, Maple Cream Cookies. A Canadian delicacy, the leaf-shaped cookies are filled with maple cream, made from 100% pure maple syrup. This cookie is a definite Canadian seasonal supermarket must. Has anyone tried them or found them in the States?

Are these the Dare brand maple cream cookies? If so, I think I've seen them around supermarkets here in NYC...

We used to have them up in New Hampshire in our college convenience store. I spent quite a bit of dining hall money on these maple goodies.

When I was in high school the retirement home I worked at served the Voortman's brand. We probably ate more of those cookies than the residents!

I will have to try making these at home ...

I usually grab some at Tops or Wegmans....ironically I found some really good ones at the Dollar Tree of all places. They were thick w/cream....don't care much about the outsides...I'm on of those who licks out the middle and often throws away the cookie part.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to find the good ones lately.....

We have them in Pittsburgh too (made by Dare, which also make a lemon cream with a ridiculous cockatoo on the packaging).

I love them. And for christmas, a friend of mine covers them in chocolate for me.

Yup... I get them at Wegmans every time I go home to my parent's for the holidays :-)

I've seen them around the Philadelphia area in the Acme stores, under the Essensia brand. I think the Safeway stores carry them too. And yeah, they're fantastic.

I second the Voortman's available year round in Northern Indiana, have no clue if they use real maple syrup they're tasty anyways.

I'm with habitat67, always get the Voortman's leaves at Wegmans when I'm home. SO good. There's also a recipe for pecan cut-out cookies sandwiched with a maple filling in the Joy of Cooking Christmas Cookie book (and probably elsewhere) from years ago that is a delicious substitute for store-bought.

They have these at the gift area at Cracker Barrell restaurants also. Just put your blinders on to get past all the other "gift items" and go in on a mission and get 'em!

Rodman's in DC has the Dare maple cookies. Yum!

I think I am going to make a maple shortbread and then a simple frosting with powdered sugar and maple extract ... I do love my maple!

I live in California and I buy them all the time from Trader Joe's.

I've lived in both Seattle and Orlando, and Cost Plus' World Market has these yummy cookies in both places (as well as a TON of other fun stuff). I buy them for my mom's stocking every Christmas -- she's Canadian and misses them!

A recent visitor from Las Vegas brought me Maple Cream Cookies (by Manning) and they were fantastic. She tells me they are available at 99 cent stores in the Vegas area. I have found the Dare Maple Creams at Walmart, but I don't think they are as good as the Manning brand.
