Biscuit Heaven at Pine State Biscuits in Portland, Oregon

20081017-pinestate.jpg

If I could choose to live anywhere in Portland, it would be right near Pine State Biscuits. A staff of friendly twenty-somethings run the kitchen stations, cranking out orders of their famous biscuits slathered in sausage or mushroom gravy, with fried chicken, eggs cooked to order, and various seasonal sides—including hash browns, grits, and braised greens. You can expect to wait on a weekend morning—ours, including the line and food preparation, was about a half hour. This is not a brunch spot to linger at, so tables turn over frequently.

We ordered a simple biscuit with butter and honey, an open biscuit swimming in sausage gravy, and sides of hot honeycrisp apples and fried green tomatoes. Though the biscuit can happily survive on its own, the addition of the slightly sweet sausage gravy kept me begging for more after my last bite. Any of the sides are enhanced by dipping into the creamy gravy—that goes for your hips too. Not sure if the mushroom gravy is a "healthier" option, but you probably shouldn't come here if you're watching your waistline—they have a breakfast sandwich called the Reggie with fried chicken, bacon, cheese, and gravy. Do come if you're watching your wallet, though. Breakfast/brunch will cost about $8 per person if you're on an empty stomach, with enough grub to keep you full until dinner. Make sure you grab a mug of Stumptown Coffee for the full Portland experience.

Dear Pine States Biscuits,

Open a shop in Alabama.

That is all.

;-)

I've been here - it's AMAZING! Had the biscuit with fried chicken, honey, very grainy mustard and pickles. I wish I had one right now!!!!!

Biscuits and gravy are my biggest weakness and kudos to them for having mushroom gravy for us vegetarians! I think I'm going to have to travel across the country to eat at this place... mmm..

How about one in Seattle?
