Outer Space Smells Like Fried Steak

20081017-spacesteak.jpg

"Houston, there appears to be a steak-laden alien vessel in low earth orbit, and it's comin' in hot."

To help train astronauts, NASA has hired a chemist, Steven Pearce, to recreate the smells of space. Astronauts interviewed after spacewalks reported smelling peculiar odors on their suits and helmets. Pearce: "For them, what comes across is a smell of fried steak, hot metal, and even welding a motorbike, one of them said." [via The Presurfer]

I would have guessed space is bacon-scented.

in space, no one can...watch you eat?

Anyone who's ever watched Futurama knows that Professor Farnsworth can always suss out space-based danger with his smell-o-scope!

Fried steak--I knew I always wanted to be an astronaut for a reason!

Has anyone tried astronaut food before? Its rubbish. I'm sure that's why they think it smells like steak. Its like when a looney toons charachter is hungry and so his friend looks like a big talking chicken wing...

@courtguerra--It's "no one can hear you belch."
