Serious Eats City Guide: Boston
Editor's Note: Serious Eats City Guides are back, and this week we're shipping up to Boston, where Boston Magazine's Amy Traverso gives us the rundown on Beantown from post-Fenway feeding to the best clam chowdah. Go Sox!
Best Pizza

Pizzeria Regina. Photograph from obiwanjr on Flickr
Always a tough one. For traditional pizza, I can never choose between the North End's Pizzeria Regina and Santarpio's in East Boston. Both have the tangy sauce, the crispy-chewy crust, and fresh toppings. Both date back more than 75 years. Both have thick-accented staffers and plenty of local color.
I can't pick one, but I can offer tips: Regina has several branches outside of the North End. Avoid! They're not nearly as good. At Santarpio's, be sure to order the housemade sausage, grilled over charcoal.
Pizzeria Regina: 11 Thacher Street, Boston MA 02113 (map); 617-227-0765. Santarpio's: 113 Chelsea Street, Boston MA 02128 (map); 617-567-9871.
Best Burger

Bartley's Burger Cottage. Photograph from Patrick Haney on Flickr
Bartley's Burger Cottage is a Harvard Square institution. Their secret? They grind their beef daily and don't pack the patties too tightly. A recent fire has temporarily shuttered the shop, but they'll be back.
Bartley's Burger Cottage: 1246 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge MA 02138 (map); 617-354-6559.
Best Clam Chowder
A point of passionate debate here in Clamtown, but we like the creamy stew at Turner Fisheries in Back Bay.
Turner Fisheries: 10 Huntington Avenue, Boston MA 02116 (map); 617-424-7425.
Best Ice Cream

Toscanini’s. Photograph by Carey Jones
One oft-quoted study named Boston has the ice cream consumption capital of the country. For that, I credit two spots, both in Cambridge: Christina's—which specializes in creative flavors like kaffir lime, carrot cake, and cajeta—and Toscanini’s, home to the world’s greatest burnt caramel ice cream and the genius micro-sundae, which fits in a little Dixie cup.
Christina’s: 1255 Cambridge Street, Cambridge MA 02139 (map); 617-492-7021. Toscanini’s: 899 Main Street, Cambridge MA 02139 (map); 617-491-5877.
Best Late-Night Eats
Stella is a very stylish restaurant in the very stylish South End. But when it comes to late-night eats, they know to keep things simple (and tasty): thin-crust pizzas, burgers, pasta. Yum.
Stella: 1525 Washington Street, Boston MA 02118 (map); 617-247-7747.
Best Beer Selection
Sunset Grill & Tap. Photograph from mjecker on Flickr
Nothing can compete with Sunset Grill & Tap: 100 beers on tap, 380 microbrews, and a staff that really knows their beer.
Sunset Grill & Tap: 130 Brighton Avenue, Allston MA 02134 (map); 617-254-1331.
Best Wine Bar
Bin 26 Enoteca’s wine list reads like a guidebook, with selections from aglianicos through zinfandels. There are more than 70 wines by the glass and 200 by the bottle. And the food is very Italian (gnocchi with wild boar sauce, lamb shank with braised beans) and wine-friendly.
Bin 26 Enoteca: 26 Charles Street, Boston MA 02112 (map); 617-723-5939.
Best Bargain Lunch

Chacarero’s. Photograph from Nuevo Anden on Flickr
For years, office workers lined up rain or shine at Chacarero’s humble Downtown Crossing window counter for the excellent Chilean sandwiches (grilled chicken or steak, Muenster cheese, green beans, and a zesty avocado spread on a freshly baked bun). Now these same workers for their queues indoors at two snazzy downtown locations. The sandwiches are still a bargain, and still delicious.
Chacarero: two locations. 26 Province Street, Boston MA 02108 (map); 617-367-1167. 101 Arch Street, Boston MA 02108 (map); 617-542-0392.
Best 'Date Night' Spot

Oleana. Photograph from QuintanaRoo on Flickr
A very relevant question for this new parent. When I don’t want to fuss with a full dinner, I love to sit at the bar at Oleana at order small plates like warm buttered hummus and tamarind-glazed short ribs. For a gourmet escape, I'm a big fan of T.W. Food, which does very imaginative French-inspired food using immaculate ingredients. And Persephone, in the Fort Point Channel district, is a terrific spot for delicious, cleanly prepared, locally-sourced food in an airy former warehouse space.
Oleana: 134 Hampshire Street, Cambridge MA 02139 (map); 617-661-0505. T.W. Food: 377 Walden Street # A, Cambridge MA 02138 (map); 617-864-4745. Persephone: 283 Summer Street, Boston MA 02210 (map); 617-695-2257.
Best Sushi and Japanese Food
O Ya has won just about every major food award in the past couple of years, and they deserve the praise. Ken Oringer’s Uni is also excellent.
O Ya: 9 East Street, Boston MA 02111 (map); 617-654-9900. Uni: 370A Commonwealth Avenue (in the Eliot Hotel), Boston MA 02215 (map); 617-536-7200.
Best Fried Seafood
To really get the best, you need to head north of the city to the Clam Box in Ipswich, or Woodman’s or Farnham’s in Essex. But in town, I’d pick Morse’s in the South End.
Clam Box: 246 High Street, Ipswich MA 01938 (map); 978-356-9707. Woodman's: 121 Main Street, Essex MA 01929 (map); 978-768-6057. Farnham’s: 88 Eastern Avenue, Essex MA 01929 (map); 978-768-6643. Morse: 1401 Washington Street, Boston MA 02118 (map); 617-262-9375.
Best Cocktail Lounge
John Gertsen, long admired for his bartending at No. 9 Park, is opening his new lounge Drink any day now, and there’s no doubt this will be the go-to spot for cocktails in Boston. Other worthy contenders include: Eastern Standard,Green Street Grill, and City Bar.
Eastern Standard: 528 Commonwealth Avenue Boston MA 02215 (map); 617-532-9100. Green Street Grill: 280 Green Street, Cambridge MA 02139 (map); 617-876-1655. City Bar: 65 Exeter Street, Boston MA 02116 (map); 617-933-4801.
Most Worth A Splurge

L'Espalier. Photograph from Nodame on Flickr
Barbara Lynch’s No. 9 Park is the ultimate destination for luxury dishes like prune-stuffed gnocchi with foie gras butter. I try to go during truffle season because there’s always something amazing to eat. Meanwhile, L'Espalier has just moved into new digs at the Mandarin Oriental, and the team is really hitting fifth gear as they play around in their incredible new kitchen.
No. 9 Park: 9 Park Street, Boston MA 02108 (map); 617-742-9991. L’Espalier: 774 Boylston Street, Boston MA 02199 (map); 617-262-3023.
Best Brunch
Not to dodge controversy, but the South End is the brunch capital of, well, Boston, if not New England, if not the East Coast north of New York. You could pick nearly any restaurant in the neighborhood and you’d have a winner (of particular note: Toro). But we’re especially fond of the brunch at Eastern Standard in Kenmore Square, where we love to down creme brûlée French toast.
Toro: 1704 Washington Street, Boston MA 02118 (map); 617-536-4300. Eastern Standard: 528 Commonwealth Avenue Boston MA 02215 (map); 617-532-9100.
Must Eat Before Leaving
Hungry Mother is one of my favorite new restaurants—a small storefront in an off-center Cambridge neighborhood serving fantastic French-Southern hybrid fare: the creamiest shrimp and grits and an excellent fried catfish with brown butter.
Hungry Mother: 233 Cardinal Medeiros Avenue, Cambridge MA 02141 (map); 617-499-0090.
Best Pub Food
The Garden at the Cellar in Cambridge is our own version of a gastropub: excellent versions of bar classics like burgers and steak frites, with lots of creative fare thrown in (pork rilletes with pickled grapes, chicken and thyme croquettes, salt-roasted pear salad). The chef, Will Gilson, grew up on an herb farm, and he’s a master at sourcing great ingredients.
The Garden at the Cellar: 991 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge MA 02138 (map); 617-230-5880.
Best Pre-Fenway Spot
Eastern Standard is an always-popular brasserie in the heart of Kenmore Square (it’s located in the Hotel Commonwealth). The food runs from fancy to simple, and it’s a great spot to grab a burger and a beer before the game. Set aside a little extra time to sample from the incredible cocktail menu. Bar Manager Jackson Cannon is one of the best in the city.
Eastern Standard: 528 Commonwealth Avenue Boston MA 02215 (map); 617-532-9100.
Best Food Market

Formaggio Kitchen. Photograph from katbert on Flickr
There are several great markets around the city, but nothing quite matches Formaggio Kitchen. In fact, I'd argue that it's the best cheese shop in the country (and, yes, I’ve been to Murray's, Cowgirl Creamery, and the Cheese Board). Beyond cheese, there's a curated selection of oils, chocolates, spices, vinegars, pastas, and other foodstuffs from around the world, plus excellent produce and a small but impressive wine selection.
Formaggio Kitchen: 244 Huron Avenue, Cambridge MA 02138 (map); 617-354-4750.
Best in the North End
Them's fighting words! Marco is my favorite Italian spot in the North End, featuring delicious Roman cuisine in a charming second floor pad with a working fireplace. For seafood, head to Neptune Oyster Bar and order whatever is on special. It’s really hard to go wrong with that approach.
Marco: 253 Hanover Street, Boston MA 02113 (map); 617-742-1276. Neptune Oyster Bar: 63 Salem Street, Boston MA 02113 (map); 617-742-3474.
Best Streetside Vendor
Not to pick favorites, but the best street food is the sidewalk barbecue that happens every Saturday at Formaggio Kitchen during the warm weather months.
Formaggio Kitchen: 244 Huron Avenue, Cambridge MA 02138 (map); 617-354-4750.
Best Bakery

Clear Flour Bakery. Photograph from mkrigsman on Flickr
Four picks here. My favorite breads are from B&R Artisan Breads (don’t miss the levain) and Clear Flour Bakery (every sandwich should be served on their pain de mie). For sweets, I go to Flour for the best classic American and French pastry. And when I’m craving something more exotic, I go to Ana Sortun's new bakery/café Sofra, which has eastern Mediterranean treats, like Sicilian orange, chocolate, and ricotta croissants and warm pistachio katmer with cream.
B&R Artisan Breads: 151 Cochituate Road, Framingham MA 01701 (map); 508-370-7730. Clear Flour Bakery: 178 Thorndike Street, Brookline MA 02446 (map); 617-739-0060. Flour Bakery: 1595 Washington Street, Boston MA 02118 (map); 617-267-4300. Sofra: 1 Belmont Street, Cambridge MA 02138 (map); 617-661-3161.
Best Steak (In a Steakhouse or Elsewhere)
Prime meat, well sourced, dry aged, and perfectly seasoned. What more could you want? For a less pricey alternative, order the ribeye at Estragon. Of that steak our restaurant critic said, “It had the marbling and much of the softness of Kobe beef, and superior flavor, for a better price.”
Estragon: 700 Harrison Avenue, Boston MA 02228 (map); 617-266-0443.
Best Lobster Roll
B&G Oysters wins for the sweetness of the meat, the perfectly grilled bun, and the addictive fries that come alongside. Neptune Oyster Bar is a very close second.
B&G Oysters: 550 Tremont Street, Boston MA 02116 (map); 617-423-0550. Neptune Oyster Bar: 63 Salem Street, Boston MA 02113 (map); 617-742-3474.

Every year our grammar school would take us to Quincy Market (Fanueuil Hall) for a field trip. I would buy a slice of Regina pizza, a few stickers, and those really fat decorative shoe laces. Hey, it was the 80's! I've since ditched the shoe laces, but still LOVE their pizza!!
Sorry...I didn't pronounce that right...it's Quinzy Mahkit

Best Thai? King and I on Charles. Just plain insanely fantastic every single time. The Paradise Beef is ridiculously delicious - fried, but never greasy. Shrimp in Love - over the top. Pad Thai is absolutely the best - and we have tried it all over the world. Don't miss the house salad; sure it looks boring but oh man! You will NEVER look at salad the same way!

Thank you SO much for this report on Boston!
GO SOX!
veggieout at 10:51PM on 10/02/08
i looove king & i! when i went to emerson, my dorm was at the corner of beacon & arlington, and my frends and i hit up that place ALL the time, the pad thai really is amazing.
we were poor college kids so we'd often go dumpster diving at upper crust on charles as well because they'd put out perfectly good pizzas at the end of the night, but i'm glad you didn't put it out there as one of the best, i always thought their pies were overrated.
also, some of the best sandwiches? dave's fresh pasta in davis square in somerville. i drool remembering those babies. fantastic. and given the name of the place, their homemade pasta and pasta sauces are truly amazing.
sarahlucy at 11:59PM on 10/02/08
OK, i've gotta debate bartleys. The place has this reputation for being like, "the world's best burgers," but the fact of the matter is,
1) they don't use much beef, meaning that a lot of the burger comes from the toppings.
2) you are quite literally shoved in and out as quickly as possible
3) let me reiterate--i'm not joking about being shoved in there; there's scarcely room for the waitresses to scurry back and forth
4) Actually, about those waitresses, another comment is neccesary--they are not nice. they will grunt at you, ignore you, and even simply say "i can deal with you right now, i'm busy."
So yeah...Bartley's definitely is not the best burger place in Boston...I'd hardly even say it's worth it.
For my money I always like Boston Beer Works, which, in addition to great burgers, is definitely a contender for Beer--it's no Sunset, but they've got a particularly impressive menu of micro-brewed beers.
Also, I feel like I should comment on a favorite haunt of mine that got no mention here: Grendel's Den, in I think Harvard Square is a really really great "just" pub--no special schtick, just good food, good beer and a really nice traditional ambiance.
rasellers0 at 12:35AM on 10/03/08
I love Pizzeria Regina, but i agree, do NOT go to any location but the one in the North End. The pizza is so much better there and the waitresses are saucy. Beer prices aren't terrible, either!
And Burger Cottage is great-- not the best burger I've ever had, but they are good and it's an experience. I would always take people there when they came to visit.

I love this series...please do a DC one next!

My vote for best thai in Boston is the original Rod Dee waaaay up on Beacon. I dream of their Pad Kra Pao and impossibly tasty fried rice which is incredibly fragrant and comes with a fried egg on top & crispy chicken chunks on the side.
JustNancy at 10:29AM on 10/03/08
rod dee is fantastic too, i ALSO lived around the corner from there, heh. but even better than rod dee is a thai place on harvard ave in brookline, headed toward allston. i forget the name, but it's near all the kosher/judaica shops on that stretch of the avenue. adorably decorated inside, as well.
sarahlucy at 10:37AM on 10/03/08
Hooray for the Sunset Grill & Tap! Oh how I miss the beer selection and how it helped me wash down many beer-steam burgers and giant plates of nachos.
absoluttres11 at 11:29AM on 10/03/08
@sarahlucy: Bamboo? That place was delicious. And the tapas place next door was good too.
Laurel E at 11:42AM on 10/03/08
Ice Cream: I'm going to vote for JP Licks over Christina's or Toscanini's, based on JP's awesome creativity. They have several locations in and around Boston.
marzipanda at 12:12PM on 10/03/08
Ahhh, my memories of eating myself silly during all my years growing up in and around Boston are flooding back.....LOVED this post. I have to add in my own faves -- great diner food and the BEST HOT FUDGE ever is Brigham's. Even though it's technically a "chain", it's a regional chain, and founded in Boston. The hot fudge there is to die for...dark and buttery and rich.
Best Tapas can be found in Somerville, right on the Cambridge line at Dali. The sangria there is the elixir of the Gods...just bring me a pitcher, a straw, then call me a cab! All of the tapas there are unbelievable, especially the grilled pork sausage with fig sauce. I even wrote to them for the recipe when I moved down to Atlanta and they obliged, very graciously!
I cannot believe Kelly's Roast Beef was not mentioned as a great place to get fried clams on the beach....granted, Revere Beach isn't the vacation spot of the world, but there's nothing better than fighting with the seagulls as they dive bomb your fries and those PERFECTLY fried whole-belly clams with their amazing tartar sauce...it's city beach dining at it's best.
These are a few of my favorite things...
GO SOX!!!
juliebugsmama at 1:42PM on 10/03/08
I would also mention Kelly's for their namesake roast beef. Revere might be an eyesore but it's an adventurous eyesore.
Sunset has great taps but the food there is terrible. Consistently.
Have to list Anna's Taqueria for burritos too. Always crowded.
kiteless at 3:46PM on 10/03/08
Thai: Brown Sugar Cafe is awesome
Ice Cream: JP Licks makes an AMAZING manischewitz sorbet. incredible.
veggieout at 6:09PM on 10/03/08
I would also add Henrietta's Kitchen in Harvard Square for brunch. I've never seen such a huge selection of awesome food for brunch anywhere else.
saelha at 8:35AM on 10/04/08
El Pelon, Anna's, Kelly's Roast Beef, The Vietnamese Sandwich please in Chinatown, the Super 88 foodcourt, Simco's hot dogs, j.p. licks/emack and bolios, upper crust, figs' pizza, texas roadhouse, legal's clam chowder, terramia, antico forno, lucca, quincy market's stands....I could go on for a bit longer....but those should all have been on there!
BaguettenBrie at 9:59AM on 10/04/08
Thanks so much for this post. It's great to see what other folks have to recommend from my area. I've found a couple of places to add to my list. Boston has so much to offer on so many levels for great places to eat. While I don't get 'into the city' as much as I used to, it's because the suburbs of Boston are overflowing with great restaurants. You can go from the North Shore right on down to the South Shore and all over Metro-West and find delicious choices and every ethnic choice there is.
BostonFoodMan at 8:54AM on 10/05/08
Nothing beats NICK'S ROAST BEEF in Beverly, MA (waaaaaaaaay better roast beef than Kelly's) They have a great Pizza Roll too! Go to Kelly's for seafood but NOT their roast beef.
mvilla at 10:34AM on 10/06/08
Thank you for including Sunset Grille- it's a really good, cheap find in the middle of Boston University's campus that is ADORED by locals/BU students. Also, Eastern Standard definitely has a great brunch... I'd suggest it for their cocktail/happy hour as well- pretty solid. In terms of B & G Oysters and No 9. Park I have yet to go, but I am eagerly awaiting my parent's arrival for Parent's Weekend so they can cover the costs!
TaylorShocks at 10:53AM on 10/07/08
I totally agree that Brown Sugar Cafe is the best Thai in the city, but sadly, they're closing!
I was also disappointed not to see Picco (513 Tremont Street) mentioned anywhere for pizza or otherwise. If you like a well done pizza, Picco is where it's at. My personal favorite is their chanterelle and leek pizza (although I don't think that's on their permanent menu, but if they have it definitely definitely try it)! Their arancini are to die for, as well as their warm spinach salad with pancetta, white beans and goat cheese. I have re-created this salad many a time, and it has quickly become a favorite of mine. They also make really wonderful homemade ice cream (the caramel swirl is my favorite, and the the dark chocolate brownie sundae is sinful) and italian soda.
And finally, best Tapas, Toro (1704 Washington Street). It may be crowded for dinner, but it's worth the wait! I recommend the patatas bravas, the chicken and potato empanadas, the grilled corn (this is a must), and of course the paella.

Best neighbourhood spots for dinner on the "other side of the river" Cambridge T.W. Food Restaurant (Huron Village), Oleana or Cuchi Cuchi (Inman Square) Craigie on Main (Central Square)

For burgers, I am a big fan of R.F. O'Sullivan's in Somerville. I think they are better than Bartley's
