Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 39: Fighting Through the Plateau Blues

Posted by Ed Levine, October 31, 2008

20080306-scale.jpgI've been eating really, really, carefully this week, yet as of yesterday morning I hadn't lost any weight since last Friday. I went to eat ramen with Erin and even though we tried six kinds, she agrees I didn't consume close to a full bowl in total. Even at fat-and-pork-centric Irving Mill, I limited myself to half a burger, a single rib, and a few bites of the charcroute plate.

From my extensive dieting experience (and I do mean extensive), it appears as if I have hit a plateau. That is, my body's thermostat has readjusted to my reduced caloric intake (doesn't that sound like I know what I'm talking about?). The good news is that I have lost enough weight to hit a plateau. The bad news: This week's weigh-in won't be as joyful.

I guess that's one of the pitfalls of diet success, and of weighing myself every day. In the end I think weighing in every day has helped me. But I have to admit it was discouraging to get on the scale every day this week and not see any progress.

What can you do? Sometimes you get the scale, and sometimes the scale gets you.

The Weigh-In

Here we go: 240. I stayed even in what was obviously a plateau week. I really hope to break the 240 pound barrier next week. Two thirty-nine would be so sweet. Stay tuned.
