Was Paul Newman's Greatest Contribution Organic Snack Foods?

Yesterday in the New York Times, Kim Severson reminded us that the late, great Paul Newman's contributions to the world of food go way beyond his epic fifty hard-boiled egg eating performance in Cool Hand Luke.
Newman significantly impacted the world of food with his line of Newman's Own products. His salad dressing isn't half-bad, his lemonade is refreshing, and his dark chocolate peanut butter cups are the stuff of serious food greatness. What's your favorite Newman's Own food?

I'm a big fan of the NO salsa. It's got actual heat and goes great with hard-boiled eggs.

I like the NO basics: the plain and simple Marinara is the best jarred sauce I've ever tried. It's a pantry staple of mine, great for "doctoring up." Of the salad dressings, the Olive Oil and Vinegar (not balsamic) is tasty and refreshingly uncluttered.
I recently had a NO black bean, corn and roasted tomato (?) salsa that was terrific.

Spelt Pretzels. (Though I usually buy the VitaSpelt ones because they're cheaper.)

I heart NO virgin lemonade. Especially good with a shot of Blueberi Stoli. :-) Yummy!

Once you eat Newman-O's, you can never go back to Oreos.

LEMOANDE LEMAONDE LEMONADE!

My family has been making "Paul Newman chicken" using the Italian dressing as long as I can remember, so I am particularly partial to Newman's Own salad dressing--I really don't like many other bottled salad dressings.
I, too, love the salsa (esp. the mango!), Ginger-O's, and the Virgin Lemonade.

The Sockarooni sauce was a fixture in our cupboard.
Have to say that his Crisp Rice chocolate bar sucks, though. Woe.

I really like the wheat-free, dairy-free Fig Newmans. Something about that sort of chewy barley flour texture covering a lovely dollop of fig just sends me over the edge.
wanderingfoodie at 9:34PM on 10/02/08
My daughter doesn't know Fig Newtons. She knows Fig Newmans. Funny to hear such a shift from the eponymous out of the mouth of a 2 year old.

My family loves the Sockarooni pasta sauce.

fig newmans get me through the day

I love the lemonade, the dressing, and so much more, but I do have to say that his natural popcorn is the best microwave popcorn in the world.
Newman was a fantastic actor and humanitarian. He also created the Hole in the Wall Gang camps for children with cancer and other critical illnesses. It provides these kids with a bit of respite, where they can have fun, just be kids/teenagers, and forget their problems. The man was a truly decent human being.. unfortunately all too rare in this day and age. We're all the less with this loss.

The lemonade is AMAZING! I haven't had much else from NO, but I could drink the entire carton of lemonade in one sitting.
amanda0730 at 1:34AM on 10/03/08
He made wonderful pasta sauces - no junk in them, and they're about half the price of other organic sauces.
cookingbroke at 8:15AM on 10/03/08
I'm a huge fan of the lemonade as well. I have tried the dressings, and like those too...but the lemonade is a staple in my fridge.
mepolo at 8:38AM on 10/03/08
huge fan of the Honey Dijon Salad Dressing. So good...and even better when you shake it with some balsamic vinegar
_greenbean at 8:58AM on 10/03/08
I like the pasta sauce, some of the salad dressings, and the popcorn. But I'll try anything that has NO on it at least once.
Laurel E at 9:22AM on 10/03/08
I like their lemonaid, but the limeaid is my favorite. I also love their pasta sauce, particularly the Marinara... and their dark chocolate peanutbutter cups... to die for! so yummy.

I would have to say Light Balsamic Vinaigrette Salad dressing and Mango Salsa. They are GREAT!!! Then again, that's all I've ever had of this items. Maybe I should try more...The lemonade comments have me curious.

Wow, I never connected Paul Newman the actor to Newman's Own products. Can't believe it!
I did enjoy his products. We used his salad dressings.

What a total stud! Yummy. I love the Newman's Own cookies (I forgot the name but they are cinnamon flavored, have the texture of a newton and are square shaped) A-mazing.
GastroGirls at 12:31PM on 10/03/08
I like his Asian dressing as well as any other bottled salad dressing out there, but there's a lot of good NO stuff to choose from.

His Sesame Ginger salad dressing is ridiculously good, and I say this as a total salad dressing snob. It's the only bottled dressing I use as dressing.
His Caesar Salad dressing makes a great marinade for meat/chicken/protobello mushrooms.
His lemonade is just as good as everyone says it is.
chisai at 2:52PM on 10/03/08
Oh, I'm sorry. I was UTTERLY distracted by that middle picture. Holy crap was he a gorgeous man. :)
Seriously though, his sesame ginger dressing is frikkin awesome. And his light lime vinaigrette is scrumptious. It doesn't taste light, and is great for marinating. I love that his foods not only go to good causes, but they're not poor quality. The stuff tastes great!
penpapercoffee at 4:46PM on 10/03/08
agreed about the sockarooni sauce. i tried to go look at their site for a list of products, and the full site is down because of the massive amount of traffic theyve recieved since his death. ill take that as a good sign. all of the proceeds for NO go to charity, correct? thats pretty amazing. what an excellent way to use your fame for the greater good. kudos, paul, and rest in peace. lets keep the ball rolling.

I love the NO Peppermint Cups. They are my ultimate guilty pleasure.
michellelikestoeat at 12:14AM on 10/04/08
Ginger Newman-O's with milk. So freakin good.
saelha at 9:11AM on 10/04/08
for me, no other brand competes with his salsa. i mash up an avocado, and dump a whole jar of the medium heat salsa in the bowl, and stir it up. i've been eating it since childhood. it has the perfect proportions...and real corny chips make it perfect.
Kerry Saretsky at 11:48AM on 10/04/08
I use a lot of his products. I love the pasta sauces (especially Sockarooni) and salad dressings. My cats love his food. But my absolute fave (so fave that I can barely keep it in the house) are the Ginger-O's. Good LORD, they are good. I talk about them frequently. If I ate them every time I thought about them, I'd be a house!
abbyladybug at 2:16PM on 10/04/08
My favorite is Newman's Own Pineapple Salsa. I find it incredibly addictive and have been known to eat it by the spoonful straight out of the jar when I've run out of tortilla chips.
goodlearner at 5:35PM on 10/04/08
Newman's Own Fair Trade Organic coffee is the best. I love to imagine I'm gazing into those gorgeous blue eyes while sipping a cup of my favorite brew every morning!

I'm all about those dark chocolate peanut butter cups. And the lemonade is fabulous.
