Food Critic and Friend Assaulted After Dinner

Steve Barnes, restaurant critic at the Albany [New York] Times-Union is beat up after a meal. Bad review? Nope. Just random violence.

Damn ... a helluva thing to read over there, and the pics are just insane.

@Adam, send my best wishes along from Michigan. Thanks.

Being an Albany native, I know the soon-to-be-opened restaurant and the location. It is not unsafe in any way, shape or form. There is a TGI Fridays right across the lot (about 50 feet away) that is always bustling with people.

From the description, it sounds like this was targeted. A bad review? Maybe. But a 20s white male with a shaved head and a large build? He also mentioned that he was out with his "friend" Josh?

Not to imply anything or draw unnecessary conclusions, but this could have easily been some form of skinhead gay-bashing.

Thank you for including this story. Steve is a well- respected and much appreciated member of the Albany food community. What happened to him is inexcusable. He will be meeting with the D.A. today at noon, so stay tuned for an update.

@Kerosena: I hope they catch the thugs. Good thing Steve and his friend are relatively OK after the attack.

@razzmission- Please read the following excerpt from Steve's blog:

I guess anything is possible, and others have suggested similar scenarios. I think this attack was about something else.

(Ooops)

"They said nothing. They asked for nothing. It would be easier to label if they’d tried to rob us or, having ascertained or perceived what they found to be a motivation, had uttered antigay comments before or while attacking. But they didn’t."

That's horrible. =( The world can be a crap place, sometimes. I'm glad someone had the guts and good sense to at least stop and try to help, though!

I agree, Kerosena, I read Steve's blog everyday. I can't think of a reason why anyone would want to hurt him. He's such a wonderful writer and all round decent guy. (and at Stuyvesant Plaza, of all places??) Hope David Soares (Albany DA) acts on this quickly and puts away whoever did it.
