Woman Discovers Strawmato, A Strawberry Inside a Tomato

20080915-strawmato.jpgEsther Walker, a 48-year-old woman from Cheltenham, Gloucester, England, was just cutting open a tomato from her garden, minding her own business, when she discovered an unplanned pregnancy. A tomato womb carrying a strawberry. Behold, the strawmato. “We’re keeping it in the fridge in case an expert wants to look at it,” she told authorities.

This triggers daydreams of other improbable fruit and vegetable hybrids. What would you want? Simpsons fans are clearly rooting for the tomacco, a cross between tobacco and a tomato, Homer's fertilization project when he "planted a little bit of everything." [via Boing Boing]

Sarah Palin would have wanted the tomato to carry the strawberry to term, no matter how it got there.

Wow!! She's 48??!!

Pumpkra (pumpkin + okra)

Goobeets (peanuts + beets)

Peatatos (peas + potatos)

Cugli (cucumber + ugli fruit)

Waterleaks (watermelon + leaks)

Peachives (peach + chives)

Broccolime (broccoli + lime)

I gotta quit!

No! Just one more?

Horshitake (horse radish + mushroom)

Wonder what it tastes like?

I try to avoid mixing food and politics, but in the interest of equal time:

Obama voted that it would be okay to remove the live strawberry, squash it, and flush it!

Am I the only one who is thinking of Tomacco here?

Right after Ripley discovers the strawmato Science Officer Ash gets his head beaten in with a fire extenquisher and you know what happens to the crew after that.

It's a monstrosity!!! Destroy it! Grapples were bad enough but now strawmatos? It's a crime against nature!! Protect her from herself!

Wow, I really wish politics didn't have to be dragged into this thread at all. I see no reason for it, from either side.

I'm looking at this thing again, and it just doesn't look like an actual strawberry. It looks like the tomato didn't get enough water, and the core didn't develop properly. That's just my opinion.

the guy who posted it over at Boing Boing didn't think it was a strawberry inside a tomato. and neither do I.

It tastes like grandma!

@srhcb---I couldn't resist joining in the fun:
how about:
broccolishes- broccoli + radishes
greach- grape + peach
cabbayam- cabbage + yam
edamamato- edamame + tomato
plumtato- plum + potato
grapple- grape + apple
garlimato- garlic + tomato

@beth1 & essny---I agree, can we all say "PHOTOSHOP"? LOL

The whole strawberry-tomato thing is highly unlikely, why one may ask?

1. Tomatoes are self-pollinating; the flowers contain both female and male parts and only need a slight agitation to fertilize.
2. Tomatoes and strawberries are from different families (even plants within the same families would be hard-pressed to interbreed i.e. tomatoes and potatoes)

I've saved tomato seeds before and the insides of tomatoes have incredible variations, especially heirlooms.

Sorry folks - that's definitely no strawberry. And she's not the first to be fooled . The same thing happened here in Utah last year:

It just looks like darker, more jellied seeds, not a strawberry. Makes for an interesting photo for sure but I wouldn't necessarily call it a strawmato!

I agree with most of the comments here...no stawmato. First, if she cut it in half, then there would be some missing from the top of the "stawberry" and some left over on the other half. It looks like the seed goop from normal tomatoes, to me.

Why didn't I get as much press attention when I discovered a strawberry n my tomato over two years ago? My picture even shows it off better: http://becksposhnosh.blogspot.com/2006/08/alien-tomato.html

;)

Indeed. Sam's funky looking tomato is a much better example.

Slow news day?

interesting flavor combo!
