Weird Food Ornaments for Christmas

20080917-foodornaments.jpg

An assortment of food-related ornaments from Bronner's

You could hang traditional ornaments on your tree, but wouldn't a taco look more interesting than a jovial Santa head? Christmas supplies purveyor Bronner's has all the food-related ornaments you could ever want and some you don't. [via Jezebel]

The pickle is sort of traditional. It is hidden on the tree and the first child to find it Christmas morning receives an extra litte gift. It's supposedly a German custom, but I think that's a myth.

@valarie: Cool, I had no idea! My childhood was deprived...no pickles. :(

I have fruit & vegetable ornaments. Including pickles (but they're not sparkly).

i have the pickle, and i also have a sparkly bulb of garlic, which i love.

I like valarie's custom, whether German or not. :)

Sur la Table has a few food-related ornaments, including French fries and a cupcake. I especially like the ornament that depicts two reindeer and a grill. I wasn't sure how to describe it...two reindeer grilling conjures up an image of two reindeer on a barbecue spit...not good at all. Better to look and see for yourself. :)

@holdthemayo: That's awesome, thanks for the link! The reindeer thing is a bit strange, but what do I know, maybe they do like grilling hot dogs...

growing up we had an ornament of a train made of gum drops and other candies (perhaps not a weird food). i guess the weird part about it was that i used to lick it every year, even until i was too old and should have known better. if it was in front of me now, i'd probably give it a lick. i can't help myself.

I have the pickle, an apple, several bunches of grapes, a fruit basket, a pear, a strawberry, garlic. I have been told the tree was originally decorated with fruit and flowers to signify a miracle, same idea as the rose blooming at Christmas in the snow.

@ valarie: i'm irish, but we've always hidden a pickle on the tree too. glad to hear we're not the only family :)

I bought a pickle ornament a little while ago. I graduated college from the north carolina school of the arts. It's a crazy little school, our mascot was a fighting pickle...thus the pickle ornament. It makes me smile:)

"Hide the pickle" always had a different meaning for me....

I have that EXACT pickle ornament!!!

@Robyn...Yeah, the reindeer are weird but somehow amusing at the same time. They look like they're tailgating...behind the sleigh. :)

We had some really nice pickle ornaments, until a couple of years ago when the cats decided the tree would look better on the floor at 3 a.m.

I have a pickle, garlic, grapes, pomegranate, orange, apple, banana, ice cream cone, strawberry, roast turkey, and various fish. I'd love to have an artichoke. Anyone know where I can get one?

@ buffy- you beat me to it- I was thinking th same thing!

@madball911...Sur la Table also has artichoke ornaments, along with several other veggies.

Smith & Hawken has an artichoke ornament, too. Go to smithandhawken.com and plug 'artichoke' in the search box, upper right corner.

Have the pickle also carrot, corn, grapes, apple, fish, hot peppers, eggplant (don't ask) and a lobster trap with the lobster on the outside.

@ holdthemayo - Thanks! But now I have to get the onion, the tomato, and the avocado, too, since I know they exist. Oh hell, and the chocolate dipped strawberry.
