Sugar-Free Pumpkin Peeps, Not Worth the $2

As a Peeps hater, I don't approve of special edition Peeps, let alone the traditional Easter ones. But this has gone too far: Sugar-free Pumpkin Peeps, made with Splenda.

Trying to create a "sugar-free" Peep is like attempting "vegetable-less" cabbage. Even if you're limited to a sugar-free diet, this is not worth it. Splenda may be 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar, but this tastes like foam. A foamy mattress, to be exact.
To make it worse, the set of three pumpkins was $1.99. Three orange, fat circles with nubs—bearing mattressy undertones—for two-bucks! And if you need one more reason to avoid this, the package says: EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION MAY CAUSE STOMACH DISCOMFORT AND/OR A MILD LAXATIVE EFFECT.
Do these put you in the Halloween mood? In general, do you like that non-Easter Peeps exist?

nothin' puts you in the holiday mood more than being doubled over in pain followed by orange peepy poo.

LMAO, only in America.

Are you sure there aren't sugar alcohols in this? That's usually what causes the 'laxative" effect.. so they may be using both Splenda AND sugar alcohols. Both are "sugar free" ingredients.

I've always had a texture issue with peeps, and these certainly won't help.

According to the non-halloween ones, they do have Sorbitol in them..depending on how low in the ingredient list, it probably has more of this than splenda. . It's a popular ingredient for sugar free gummies and sugar free caramel snacks (caramel corn). You wouldn't want to eat all three in a sitting probably... lol

I think my brain just exploded from reading the words "Sugar Free Peeps." Wait...isn't the sugar the point?
Though I can't stand them now, I'll admit that I freaking loved Peeps as a kid and I looked forward to the seasonal ones. They didn't have any weirdo flavorings added to them like those "vanilla" or "chocolate" or "strawberry" (blech), they were just Peeps that were shaped differently. I really only remember pumpkins....

Those pumpkins are excited to see us... their little nubs are hard and pointy. :)

When I was first diagnosed as type 2, my wife saw some sugar free jelly beans and thought she'd get them for me. I was unaware of the laxative effect of sugar free candy. I certainly learned quickly.

The cocoa peeps are excellent (basically regular peeps with sweetend cocoa on the outside), but I have found the other flavored peeps (peppermint and so on) to be yechhy. Stick to the classics!

The only thing that puts me in the halloween mood is candy corn. Bring it on.

a Peeps hater should not be allowed to review a Peeps product! But then again, only a Peeps hater would create SplendaPeeps. Were they pumpkin-flavored?
eleeb at 1:50PM on 09/20/08
i find anything with splenda to be unedible.
my mom has an affinity for peeps (and trying new products) so i'll ward her away from them.
i'm with modysoul on the mood setting affect of candy corn. i don't really like eating it, but it does psych me up for halloween.
oh, and fastfoodcritic, you made me spit the water i was just drinking with your comment.
gastronomeg at 3:57PM on 09/20/08
@fastfoodcritic: you made me "lol"
I would like to know if these sugar free peeps expand in the microwave (like regular peeps) creating a giant mattressy orange pumpkin.

Ewww. Splenda does not belong in food, period.
randomeater at 12:47AM on 09/21/08
When you need a peeps fix, only a stale - left out in the open air for weeks - will do.
Skip the splenda..
and I don't care what shape they are - stale peeps are divine. But one will do me!

though i too love the traditional candy, some of us cannot enjoy it without spending another hour on the elliptical.
i appreciate the effort the peeps' peeps are making...

I'm with eleeb, would much rather read a review from someone who didn't hate the original.

I've eaten the sugar-free Peeps before (am diabetic and, before being diagnosed, LOVED Peeps of all shapes and seasons)... they're not that terrible. The coating on the outside is kinda funky (being that it's not sugar, it's not gonna be the same as the original... it's a little chewy but not inedible), but the inside is really similar IMO to regular Peeps - sticky, fluffy, decent marshmallow-y/vanilla flavor. I missed Peeps for years before these little guys came along and made my Easter!
