Oatmeal Is Starbucks' Most Popular Food Launch

20080904-starbucks-oatmeal.jpg

Starbucks announced last week that the chain's "Perfect Oatmeal," launched in early September, is the chain's single most popular food launch in the company's history. Oatmeal is a very beautiful thing, and I'm glad America agrees.

I'm also glad Starbucks didn't do anything to make it funky. For $2.45, it's just oats and hot water in a cup. Optional packets of dried fruit, mixed nuts, and brown sugar add a nice purist touch. According to Michelle Gass, the senior vice president of marketing at Starbucks: "We believe we have hit a home run."

Oatmeal has always been a home run in my heart.

I'm amazed that people are paying for this. I would imagine you could buy a BOX of plain instant oatmeal for $2.45, heat up some water at work, and have the same thing for two weeks for the same price! Silly.

What Liz said.
Also, as I've said in the past, you can make your own in the time it takes to line up*, order and pay - at a fraction of the price.

*Under 2 minutes.

Amen to all of that. The toppings Sbux offers are neat, but instant oatmeal is SO CHEAP. They're making a freaking killing.

i was so disappointed when I got it- I thought it'd be good, creamy, yummy oatmeal but $2.45 for instant? no way!

As a former SBUX barista, I've kinda kept up with the place. From what I understand, it isn't necessarily the most popular food launch, but the profit is enormous since, well, it's cheap to produce and as others have pointed out, the profit margin is killer.

Also, other food at SBUX stinks...sandwiches are loaded with sodium and fat. The pastries are really bad for you...

It's nice and all, but I think it's sort of more marketing than any great triumph.

It was late afternoon (around 16:00), my husband and I were a little hungry and thirsty. Starbucks was the first thing we saw that we could agree upon. I got the oatmeal with fruits and brown sugar, my husband got a plain multigrain roll. We split our usual green tea frappucino. It was cutely packaged (I am a sucker for nice packaging) and hit the spot so I didn't need to eat until breakfast the next day (beef stew with rice).

2.45 for a snack at Starbucks is not too expensive. Should you stock up on the stuff for your home? No. But is it a good, easy, healthy, cheap thing to eat if you're not at home and hungry? Yes.

It's $3.45 ($3.25 US) in Canada! I'm sure it's delicious, but that's a ridiculous price for powder+water.

I travel a lot for work, and it's so hard to eat well in airports. I love this oatmeal.

I like to get it if I am hungry and don't want to eat something with 500+ calories and tons of fat. I like their tall latte and oatmeal combo.
