Adventures in Lame Marketing, Part Whatever

lamemarketing1.jpg

How excited would you be if you got a GOLD STANDARD box, shaped like a gold bar, delivered in the mail? We thought something awesome might be inside—but what?

Really expensive chocolate? Other candy? Chocolate-covered bacon? Diamond-studded chocolate-covered bacon? Something, anything, to satiate our pre-lunch hunger?

Were we ever disappointed. The answer, after the jump.

Progresso 100% Natural Chicken Broth. Great.

Well, is it any good?

Any stock that has chicken powder, autolyzed yeast extract, and carrot juice concentrate can't be that good.

You know a bunch of marketing bigwigs sat around for hours trying to come up with this marketing sceme. "People want gold! They want luxury!" They probably don't even know what autolyzed means.

was it free? stop complaining, you brat.

maybe instead of a chicken that lays gold eggs, they found a chicken that makes gold chicken broth. eh? eh??

nope, still lame.

They must be running scared of Wolfgang Puck Organic Chicken Broth which is my go-to when I don't have my own in the freezer. The WP does have yeast extract but not the other two chem lab items you mention.

Lame, yes. Disappointing - there was no Godiva chocolate. Stupid, no.
Anyone who buys chicken broth for $3 plus per quart ($12 per gallon) versus throwing a $3 chicken in a pot with a few aromatics and water to make a gallon or more of better stock plus having the chicken to use in another dish may just be impressed with a gold box. Considering the target market......

*sniffle* I feel so cheated, the progresso chicken broth sample I was sent this week came in plain ol cardboard!

Woo freakin' hoo.

It not only got your attention, it got you to post about it to your blog. I'd say the marketing works.

@jayatl: Where are you getting a $3 chicken? The last chicken I bought was about $8. I can't even get enough chicken wings for $3 to make stock.

@Geeka: I would say it depends on where you live. In rural Florida, I usually paid less than $3 a chicken. After moving to southern California, I was shocked to see chickens costing $7!
