Paul Newman, as Cool Hand Luke, Eats 50 Eggs

20080927-newman.jpg

I was saddened to open my computer this morning and read that Paul Newman died yesterday. From great movies like The Hustler, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Sting, to his line of foods that benefits charity, his work will be missed by many. Our condolences go out to his friends, family, and fans. As a celebration of his life and art, we've got a great clip here after the jump. Who can ever forget the egg-eating scene in Cool Hand Luke? Nobody can eat 50 eggs—or can they? Related: The Passing of Newman's Own Founder, Actor Paul Newman [from Talk]

This news bummed me out, too. It seems like few celebrities have anywhere near the integrity, humility, and generosity Newman had.

That news bums me out too--I've always really respected him. Not solely because of the egg-eating scene either...although certainly that played a role.

i ate fifty eggs once and then i climbed into a giant elephant made of wax that made a sound like cotton candy exploding in the night.

Really strange coincidence: the day before Mr. Newman passed away, BF and I were wandering around Domaine Chandon when an older woman came up to him and began um, hitting on him (this happens a lot; I don't know, I guess I'm not intimidating to older women?), and at one point said, "Has anyone ever told you that you look like a young Paul Newman?" I had to walk away to stifle my giggles (this came directly after "My gosh, you have the most beautiful blue eyes"; the conversation included her grilling him on his NY neighborhood and how they were both born in the same hospital, probably over 30 years apart though, etc.).
