In Videos: Kenny Shopsin on 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien'

shopsinconan.jpg

To ring in the release of his new book yesterday, Eat Me: The Food and Philosophy of Kenny Shopsin, restaurateur Kenny Shopsin was on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and, like most chefs, did a cooking segment with O'Brien.

On his best behavior, apparently Kenny Shopsin was warned to keep it clean. After using the word "goo" to describe the burnt edges of cheese on a grilled cheese sandwich, Shopsin said: "Usually I use a different term, but they told me not to." To our disappointment, not a single beep was heard.

They made pancakes! Mac n' cheese pancakes, peanut butter and jelly pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, S'mores pancakes, and the newest addition to the Shopsin's menu: the Conan Burger, a cheeseburger pancake. The segment was much too short, leaving us wanting more Kenny.

The video, after the jump.

best... appearance... ever!

Lord, that's hilarious.

And sure enough, the Conanburger is on the menu! (I ate at Shopsin's this morning and it's there in print. I trust Kenny, but had to see for myself.) Couldn't bring myself to order a meaty pancake at 9:00 AM, but one certainly could.

I recorded this last night and watched it this morning. Shopsin was clearly on good behavior (I loved when he said that there WAS a word he'd been told he couldn't say on camera). He was wonderfully gracious, even telling Conan that his (Conan's) mac&cheese pancake turned out better than his own (Kenny's).

But my favorite line had to be after Conan spurted so much jelly on his PB&J pancake, and Kenny said, "Am I supposed to be Art Carney or Jackie Gleason here?"

A real NYer; he did us proud. God bless Kenny Shopsin.

After watching that segment I have to think maybe I am a bit like Kenny. Now I like him.

OK, I've never heard of this guy, but please someone give him his own show, or at least a reoccurring appearance on Conan. Pure genius!

Tell me there's no room for a guy like this on the Food Network. I'd rather watch him make pancakes than watch Rachel Ray. Unless he was ON Rachel Ray of course...now there's an interesting idea....and put it on cable so we can hear the real Kenny!

Did anyone notice that Conan put cheese on the chocolate chip pancakes??

If you have a Netflix account, you can watch a documentary ("I Like Killing Flies," 2003) all about Kenny and his "hole-in-the-wall Greenwich Village greasy/gourmet restaurant" ... it's an instant download, too, if you've got the right browser, etc. (unfortunately now closed since the release of the movie)

(Sorry. I meant the restaurant mentioned in the documentary have closed since the release of the movie, not the download on Netflix.)

DaveFaris, Shopsin's didn't close permanently. It's moved two times. Now it's open as a stall inside the Essex Street Market, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9-3.

wow. i love them. i wish kenny could have stayed longer. and i also wish max could have been invited :D

o my gosh, don't give him a show! i love him, he'll be ruined, another scripted t.v persona...o i hope it doesnt happen...
