Hydrox vs. Oreo vs. Newman O's vs. Joe Joe's
Now that Hydrox cookies are back on the shelves, the debate over how they stack up against their competitors has begun. Megan Reardon and Scott Andrew of Not Martha recently put them to a taste test against Oreos and Newman O's.
For Overall I liked Oreos while Scott preferred the less sweet Hydrox. I preferred the extra crunch that the Oreos had and found that the flavors were the most balanced. The Newman O's had the crunchiest cookie and I found it had the most pronounced cocoa flavor, but I thought the cookies tasted slightly off, something which came through most when we compared the creme fillings.
I haven't tried the Newman O's, though I am a fan of Newman's other products, so between Hydrox and Oreos, I choose Oreos. I think they have the most perfect sweet filling, and I personally like the way they turn to mush in milk, giving them an almost milkshake-like consistency. For the runner up, I second some commenters on Not Martha who recommended that Megan give the the Trader Joe's Joe-Joe's a try. I'm definitely a fan of these, and around the holidays I go crazy for the insanely delicious Candy Cane Joe-Joes.

how can you really beat Oreos and a tall glass of milk? it's Americana at its finest.

I stopped eating Joe-Joe's when they stopped making the peanut butter frosting flavored ones. The regular oreo-type Joe-Joe's aren't as good as Oreo's or even the Newman O's. I prefer the Newman O's overall.

I go with the Newman-O's...I mean...it's about the same price, so, what the hell, I might as well go organic. I agree it's got a more pronounced cocoa flavor...but I think that's a good thing.
That said, you really can't go wrong with any of them...

I am not a cookie eater, but I consider Candy Cane Jo Joes to be Christmas cookie crack! My sister introduced me to them last season (bless you/curse you!) and I find myself unable to resist buying them.
How much longer until they come back?

No - the best are Back to Nature in the purple box. Try those!

I found the Newman-o's to have a weird kind of fruity flavor. I wonder if they use fruit juice as a sweetener.

Must have Oreo's, no substitutes! The fat free ones are crisp and wonderful.

Always been a Hydrox fan and the new ones aren't the same but are still pretty good.

I will second rachelb's nomination of Back to Nature. The cookies are very crisp and chocolatey.

Late July Vanilla Bean sandwich cookies are AMAZING as are chocolate cream Newman-O's. They are my preferred sandwich cookie crack of choice. :)

What about Whole Food's 365s? Real chocolatey, cocoa cookie (not too sweet) and creamy sweet filling. Much better than Newman's. I haven't had an Oreo in years, so can't really compare them, but my teenager's friend asked him (after tasting one) why his Oreos have "365" stamped on them -- so they must be similar.

@Dee
The 365 brand cookies are by far the best...and they don't have any hydrogenated oils. They're crispy and taste a lot more natural than Oreos.
