Working on Economic Bailout, Capitol Hill Disagrees on Take-Out

No all-nighter on the Hill outlining a proposed $700 billion bailout would be complete without take-out. Last night, when members of the House and Senate met to put a Band-Aid on the financial bust, they had pretty different take-out orders, as the New York Times reports.
On the House side, there was pizza and for the Senate, Thai food. Sarah DiGregorio at the Village Voice would rather be in the Senate (clearly a lemon grass lover). But maybe the pepperoni fan in you prefers Pelosi's people.
Which side are you on?

James Madison always liked to dip his pizza in a cooling saucer of bicameral spicy Thai dipping sauce, if I remember correctly.
Seriously, I love some Thai food, but I've gotta go with pizza on this one. Populist appeal + more grease = more fuel for late-night legislatin'.

I am all about the Thai! My favorite take out is Siamese eggplant over jasmine rice! Yay for Thai food!

I would have thought a big dish of Vietnamese spring rolls would have been the go...

No doubt for me... Pizza!
P.S. -- I hate ALL politicians, equally.

I do like thai food... but I hate elitists. what do i do!?!?

I've been brown-bagging breakfast and lunch for weeks due to this economy, and I consider it a good day if I can cook something fast for dinner before 9 pm every night... I really don't want my taxes to pay for either Thai or Pizza. Yes, I'm disgruntled.

I'm with FFC. Can we eat the politicians? On second thought, that would probably cause some wicked indigestion.

The trick to eating politicians is to make sure to remove their venom sacs beforehand.
AllenW at 12:03AM on 09/26/08
Ahh, just like the puffer fish. Thanks for the tip!

Pizza seems more appropriate for the job at hand - grab a slice, munch while you're figuring out how to "save the economy". Like study food in college.
Thai food is more like the restaurant you go to after you've accomplished something, not before.

I thought they were cannibals. I think they need to lock them in there till they get some work done and not feed them till they fix this mess.
Incentive? Democracy seems to be taking too long.

I prefer Thai food, but of the two photographs, the pizza (provided the pepperoni was vegetarian) looks far more appetizing than the beige noodles.
So much for belt-tightening and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
HeartofGlass at 5:35AM on 09/26/08
But I love them both so much! Not the legislative bodies, the foods.
Laurel E at 9:28AM on 09/26/08
It makes sense...the House is the legislature of the people, the populists, hence pizza. The Senate is home to more intellectual, sophisticated debate, hence the Thai.
(excuse me while I stifle laughter...)
jd7979 at 9:36AM on 09/26/08
It's down to simple economics--the House has more representatives, the Senate only 100, so the Senate can afford more expensive food.
This would make sense, of course, if said bodies kept within a budget, but oh then, it's the administration responsible for reigning in costs--extra cheese and a few extra dollars for some more troops, please!
HeartofGlass at 10:27AM on 09/26/08
I hear the thai in DC is quite good. However, I've never heard the same boast about DC pizza. I'm torn but I'd go with the thai. Now put a diFara pie head to head against Sripraphai...

@bronxbrinergal: Pad Thai (dish to the right) is very quick to make and inexpensive. Usually takes me ~30 minutes and is pretty cheap to make. Shrimp (chicken, duck, whatever), tofu, rice sticks, bean sprouts, egg, palm sugar, fish sauce, tamarind, chile powder, crushed peanuts, bit of oil, and you're all set. Oh, and a squeeze of lime.
In case others were wondering why chives and shallots were missing - I don't eat 'em. :P
Easy decision. I don't eat pizza so I'd pick the Thai. As far as House vs Senate? As my mother used to say each election year, as far back as I can remember, "Same book, different cover."
Cassaendra at 12:20PM on 09/26/08
Maybe we should lock them all in there until they get so hungry they eat each other...then, POOF! All new congress and senate with term limits.
bessfour at 3:43PM on 09/26/08
thai. thankyouverymuch.
sarandi at 11:50PM on 09/26/08
Dog food! That's all they deserve...
