British Amateur Chef Dies After Eating Extremely Spicy Chili

20080929-chili.jpgAndrew Lee, 33, had just passed a physical at work when he bet his girlfriend's brother he could make a hotter chili. The Telegraph reports: "Toxicology tests are now being carried out to see if the fork lift truck driver suffered a fatal reaction to the dish or whether anything else contributed to his death." Is that even possible? I thought capsaicin triggered a psychological effect, meaning there wasn't actually any physical harm being done to the body. At least this is what Alton Brown tells me. Anyway, if I could die from eating spicy foods I would seriously have to reconsider my diet.

One should make it their goal in life not to die in a way that a cartoon character would.

if he bought fresh chilis to put in, especially if they were organic or from his garden, they might have been infected with something. i dont know. remember the spinach freak out? and tomatoes? and dole lettuce?

That was one explosive chili or he's extremely unlucky?

I thought I was going to die the one time I ate an Indian dish that I HAD to eat 1 teaspoon (1 bite) with 1/4 - 1/2 cup of rice. I asked for at least 10 cups of rice that meal.

During the spinach scare, I ate spinach the entire time. This year, I ate tomatoes and jalapenos all summer long.

I'm with Buffy on this story.

Healthy people don't die very often from those salmonella/e.coli problems. THose that do don't die fast.
