Fishing Bait Vending Machine

20080820-fishbaitvendo.jpgGive a man a fish, they say, and he'll eat for a day. Teach him to fish, and he'll eat forever—as long as he has bait.

Continuing our series of wacky food-vending machines is this one, sent in by my friend Sydney. She says, "This was bizarre. My cousin took a photo of a bait-vending machine in Idaho. Somehow I thought it would be of some strange interest to you and your Serious Eats compatriots."

It is.

Yeah, it's not directly food-related, but I think I've made my point on how it can indirectly score you some food. I think my dad will like this post, as will you, HunterAnglerGardenerCook.

Hmmmm, I'd like to get one of those and just re-label it "Sushi to Go", place it downtown and observe via web cam.

I've seen a lot of these, usually they offer nightcrawlers and dead crickets and stuff, it's hard to sell bullhead minnows through a vending machine cause they die real fast without water.

Out in Penciltucky and Marylandtucky we got these here machines all over the dang place. People up here like do do some fishin.

@JerzeeTomato: They've had these for at least a decade in Penciltucky, I remember seeing them on my trips home. They're just an upgrade to a chest fridge on the front porch of the general store with coffee can next to it to put your $.25 in -- the fresh bait honor system will never again be what it used to be.

"Yeah, it's not directly food-related..."

It is if you're a fish, serious bait eaters that they are.
