Exploding Banana Head Performance Art

20080818-explodingbananas.jpg

For his Think Globally, Act Locally performance video, Brooklyn-based artist William Lamson put on a mask embedded with firecracker-stuffed bananas and filmed himself lighting each fuse, causing the bananas to explode. What's the message? ArtSlant says, "The banana, a classic agent for slapstick pratfalls, has also now come to represent the pitfalls of corporate farming practices." I say, "Bananas are evil and must be destroyed." I'm probably wrong.

I don't know why this is, but the first thought I had when I saw this picture was of that kid who sat in back of me in math class with the horrible acne.... I'll leave it at that. But, it was my first thought.

There are so many things one could say in response to this art piece!

It is difficult to choose just one.

I think the guy just hates himself.

First the clown meat, now this? I shudder to think what awaits...

As far a being a work of art goes, it's no crucifix in pee, I can tell you that much!

I think he's trying too hard to make a point. It looks gross and some weird version of that pinhead dude in Hell Raiser.

Does the work define itself well enough in terms of its epistemology? I'm not so sure.

Does it speak of the Evil Corporation? At first glance it seemed that the work definitely belonged in the post-Feminist genre. But then hints of Beauty School ("How to Give a Good Facial 101") arose tenuously in an underlying sort of way.

In the final analysis though mostly it screams "Banana Split!"

Bananas must die!!!

The message is that performance art must go.

between this and that meat face, I am thoroughly disturbed this morning.

I couldn't stop laughing when the "nose" banana exploded. Very absurd.
