What's Your Favorite Food on a Stick? It's Gotta Be Served at the Minnesota State Fair

It's Labor Day weekend, and that means it's Minnesota State Fair time. The New York Times reports that fairgoers can enjoy—get this—60 different foods served on a stick, ranging from corn on the cob to smoked walleye to meatballs and spaghetti on a stick.

I started thinking about two things:

  • What are the 50 foods being served on a stick? Here's all the food and drink being served at the fair, but there is no way of knowing what's stick-based and what isn't
  • What is my favorite food on a stick? I do love a good corn dog, but more often than not I'm disappointed in the corn dogs I order. Plus, my picking a corn dog means I am just not aware of the array of foods served on a stick

What about it, serious eaters? What is your favorite food served on a stick?

thanks for featuring our fair :)

Search for "on-a-stick" at the State Fair link in your post. You'll see what they have!

Favorite food on a stick at the MN State Fair: Fudge Puppy. It's a fresh, hot Belgian waffle, dipped in chocolate, with whipped cream and sprinkles. It's fabulous. I have to get at least one a year.

Being from MN during this time is fantastic! We had a third of a pound of maple drenched fried bacon on a stick and found it really tasty, but my husband really liked the foot long pizza on a stick best. It was kind of like a corndog shaped calzone.

aaaarrrrgggghhh i missed it because of college.... durn. wish i was there. gotta say though, nothing quite like a pronto pup.

I want a Fudge Puppy. Now. Perhaps we can convince Waffles & Dinges that they should serve their waffles on sticks...

As for food on a stick. I love caramel apples with peanuts.

Ditto on the Fudge Puppy, but I think the corndogs kick the pronto pups all over the fairgrounds. I also tried the spicy beef stick this year- think jerky that's actually good. This is not on a stick for it is itself a stick. And if you are at the fair on that day when it gets rainy and cold, nothing will beat the chill like the deep-fried snickers on a stick.
But the most surprisingly awesome food I tried this year was not on a stick- it was the liquid nitrogen ice cream. It truly was the smoothest ice cream I've ever encountered- and it tasted really good too.

I haven't made it down to the Fair for a few years, but I wouldn't be surprised to find some nice Luthern church ladies serving Hot-Dish-On-A -Stick!

Corn Dogs.

But I just invented something new. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough on a Stick

just had a pork chop on a stick... it was good! also had smoked bbq chicken breast, you guessed it, on a stick... good stuff.

Giant pickle on a stick. Best. Ever. The pickle juice ends up all over your face and drips down your arm, and it's so refreshing on a hot summer day. Never been to the MN State Fair, but pickle on a stick is the only thing I can't leave Taste of Chicago without eating.

The Fudge Puppy sounds phenomenal, but the Cinnamon Nut Roll on a stick sounds illegal. This is the first day I've ever wondered why I've never visited Minnesota.

RE: poke: "This is the first day I've ever wondered why I've never visited Minnesota."

Of you do ever visit, check the weather forecast first.

It's beautiful this weekend, but we've already had temps in the 30's Up North.

A great corn dog is my favorite food on a stick but after looking at the Minnesota State Fair lineup, I'm definitely wanting to try some new things that would likely supplant the corn dog on my list:

1. "tator tots (hash browns formed with cheddar cheese, bacon, green onion, sour cream) deep fried on-a-stick"

2. "cajun seasoned alligator sausage on-a-stick"

3. "deep fried smores on-a-stick"

Just wondering about two items I saw...does anyone know what these are: "Puff Daddy on-a-stick" and "Thai One On sausage on-a-stick"? I don't know what they are, but I got a kick out of the names. :)

@holdthemayo: I believe Puff Daddy on-a-stick is slices of sausage wrapped in puff pastry...on a stick

@kj415...Thanks!

"On a stick" always reminds me of the ventriloquist who had a jalapeno on a stick as part of his act. :)

@holdthemayo...you mean Jeff Dunham? Love him. José Jalapeño...on a steeek. :)

Yakitori is the best food on a stick.

My theory is that almost anything tastes better on a stick!!!

@manda - you, me, and "Something About Mary"! It even translates into Hebrew - I said "ha kol yoter tov b'shipud" at a beach party a month ago, and someone said "oh, yeah, Something About Mary, that was a good movie"!

@holdthemayo

Every year I go to the Minnesota State Fair, I try a new food on a stick--this year it was the tator tots. They were fabulous...made me want to try cooking them at home--very flavorful.

Today's the last day of the fair and there are several convention-goers in attendance due to the shorten convention schedule.

For a selection of signs from State Fair booths, including the Puff Daddy On A Stick, see http://tinyurl.com/foodstick

@kj415...Jeff Dunham is exactly who I was thinking of.

@Teri...I'm glad those tater tots were as good as I imagine they would be.

@maryn...Thanks for the link. I can't help humorously thinking that Puff Daddy on a stick sounds a bit cannibalistic, as if Sean Combs is being served up as fair food. ;)

dammit - I wanted to post a picture of Jose Jalapeno on a steeeek

:-(

I went yesterday and had the tater tots OAS and they were delicious! I also enjoyed pizza OAS but that was more like a calzone with chopsticks inside :(

Can't wait for next year's fair! Maybe we can organize an SE meet-up!

I live in MN! Can't beat a corn dog at the fair, it's the first thing I get. The pickle popsicle wasn't that good, total letdown as I am a pickle person.

@maryn - great pictures!
