Use Italian Sodas in Your Cocktails

20080812-chinotto.jpgTired of the over-sweetened, quinine-less offerings from Schweppes and Canada Dry, the Wall Street Journal's Eric Felten looks for something completely new to spice up his cocktails: Italian sodas. Turning away from the traditional trio of tonic, ginger ale and cola, Felten proclaims that "Italian sodas present one of the great untapped fields of cocktail development in the States." He praises Safeway's new O Organics house brand as well as the lemonade and orange sodas from San Pellegrino, but his favorite is a bitter citrus soda called chinotto made by San Pellegrino and Abbondio, among other soda companies. For ideas on how to use the bittersweet beverage, check out the article's cocktail recipes.

I use the Izze brand soft drinks to make some yummy drinks with vodka. Also the sparkling lemonade/ grapefruit make good bases as well.

Brio makes the best Chinotto

I love a lot of the more subtle San Pellegrino flavors, but, alas, I usually don't get much up here in rural NH (I particularly like the dry version of SanBitter). Any good sources online?

Limonata with Absolut Ruby Red and a sprig of mint. Been a favorite over here for a couple of years.

I'm waiting for Jones Soda to make their Lemon Drop Dead all year long...that stuff is addictive, and is unfortunately, unobtainium any time except Halloween. Great as a mixer!

My friend turned me on to Limonata and Absolut pear vodka. Really tasty.

Izze is good and so is "Dry" (with flavors like lemongrass, rhubarab and lavender). I really like combining the lavender soda with vanilla vodka for a really girly drink.
