Turkish Eggs on Yogurt

20080814-eggsonyogurt.jpg

I've gotta be honest with you: I don't think I'd ever heard of eggs on yogurt before. But why not? I love eggs. I like* yogurt. Why not try putting them together? To me, it's an unlikely combo that sounds just crazy enough to work.

Serious Eats intern Emily Koh shot this photo and uploaded it to Photograzing recently. As she says, "You can't go wrong with poached eggs, and combining it with the yogurt and the slight spiciness from the chili oil = genius combo."

Thanks for making me ultra hungry during my morning web-surfing, EKoh. :-P

* I won't kid you: I like yogurt but eat it mostly as part of a healthy breakfast.

Not for me, thanks. It's a texture thing. Eggs need to come with their better half - BACON - and its crisp salty bite. Too much unappealing soft mushiness in that egg & yogurt combo for me.

(yogurt benefits from the crunch of nuts and chewiness of dried fruit.)

Yeah. I add nuts and fruit to my yogurt. I just would rather have bacon and eggs, if I had my way.

ooh, that does look really good. Especially if you use Greek yogurt.

I can see how that could sound offputting, but I have to chime in that the turkish eggs at Public are freaking incredible. I'm a believer. Next challenge is figuring out how to replicate at home.

Is that just pure chili oil there, or something more elaborate?

@ rheogs: maybe butter and some paprika?

I followed the link and apparently it is a combo of butter and kirizmi biber. KB is "It is a fine blend of chilli peppers hot and sweet flaked and rubbed with olive oil and gently roasted until nearly black giving it an unmistakable flavour and aroma."

I think with eggs with warm yogurt and butter does not sound too bad. Maybe for those missing the bacon can do a combo of butter/bacon fat?

It sounds delicious! Now I'm salivating...

Greek yogurt is the same thing as Turkish yogurt...
