The Omnivore's 100

This is really great. The blog Very Good Taste has come up with a list of 100 items that every omnivore should try in his or her life. And has turned it into a meme. Basically, you copy the list from Very Good Taste's The Omnivore's 100 and post it to your blog, bolding the items you've tried and striking through any you would never try. Hey Adam, they have several poutines at Inn at LW12 - I've heard people complain about their version, but it was good enough for me - when am I ever going to be in Canada anyway?

So are the things in bold the things that you HAVE had? So Alaina has never had a hostess fruit pie? Are you kidding me? Go to a bodega or a newstand and pick one up for that poor, deprived girl.

Why not haggis? It's seriously tasty, and believe me, there's not a sheep's intestine in sight. It's all good meat (a hell of a lot better than that found in many burgers and chicken nuggets). It may (if you're lucky) be packed into a sheeps stomach lining, but that's just packaging (and how eco!), not to be eaten.

If you run out of inspiration there is always the recently released book 1001 Foods to Taste Before You Die available to use as resource.

And actually, Raphael was offended when the majority of the office had not experienced a Hostess fruit pie before so he went out and bought some, changing all of our lives (including Alaina's). Ok, not really. We agreed that stuff is better under the age of ten.

@casperOne: I need to update my list. Raphael was kind (?) enough to pick up some hostess fruit pies yesterday afternoon for the hostess fruit pie virgins in the office (I was not the only one!).

Not a very challenging list, IMHO. Many of these things are staple items in our house.

@sarahdlr: Good point, re: haggis. I suppose I eat sausages with natural casing, so what's the biggie, huh? I will mentally un-strike it but leave it x-ed out on my list above for posterity.

I find it funny that I have eaten something Serious Eater head honcho Ed has never eaten...Vodka Jell-o. Clearly Ed did not go through a depraved Jell-o shots phase in high school.

All you folks who posted up there and haven't had Epoisses... that should be the priority right now. Best cheese on earth.

Maybe Santa will send some Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee to the Serious Eats offices. :)

I was wondering about the crocodile thing, too. Maybe they meant alligator.

ive had 44, not too bad i think. it pales in comparison to you serious foodies, but im happy. there were a few things on the list that i just simply havent gotten around to eating, but not for lack of want.

It's amazing what is totally normal to eat for "us" that is considered disgusting to "them". I was chatting with a new friend the other day who lives in Wales and the idea of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich made him want to puke.

That said I think that the list is a good one and am happy to report that I only have 12 items to check off before it's complete. Try everything! Twice if the first time didn't quite take.

Not bad, I've had 66 and there are only a few things I would pass on (Haggis, Head Cheese, the cigar, umeboshi and horse)

Yay I hit 81! (See my post here - but there was something wrong with my blog so the formatting's a little different.)

The only two things I wouldn't eat are roadkill and umm rocks/dirt/wtf?!! Now I have a goal, foodwise :)

My list is a mere 29. Though, I plan on moving to SF soon, so that should expand my food horizons. Some of them aren't things I haven't wanted to try, I just haven't. Like eggs Benedict and Huevos.....I usually order waffles for breakfast.

I do also find it funny that less people have had a Jello shot than I thought. We made Midori Sour Jello shots in college, but you have to find lemon Jello for that.

I have 76 done and 24 to go, assuming that crocodile and alligator are the same (aren't crocodiles a protected species in the USA?).

Yes, I've had crocodile in Johannesburg, South Africa, at a place called Carnivore -- one of those Brazilian all-you-can-eat type joints where they specialized in farm-raised game meats.

Your formatting isn't only different - it's not formatted at all, from what I can see. There are no bolds/strike thrus (viewing on Moxilla Firefox 2). Maybe there are and your bold font is just indistinguishable from not bold?

Who would risk eating Fugu? I don't trust anyone enough to cut me a piece of a fish that could easily cause me to asphyxiate and die.

Falafel isn't on the list. Not worth the read.

I made a Visual Omnivore's Hundred on Flickr. It is a set of photos from all over the place of all the food found on the original Omnivore's Hundred. I also added descriptions of each so people don't have to look up what the food is. (I also added 6 more to the end). Please check it out. It took me two whole days to complete. :-)
