Photo of the Day: Brass the Beagle Digs Through Serious Eats Trash

Photograph by Raphael Brion

Last time we saw Ed's beagle, Brass, he was poking his head in a dishwashing machine. This morning when he visited the office he hurriedly waddled toward Raphael's trash can (hence why he's a smidge blurry) and rifled through its contents until he found some day-old Chinese barbecue rib bones. If Ed hadn't dragged Brass out of the office, he probably would've sniffed our trash cans for the rest of the day, then moved onto other offices to rifle through their trash cans.

And no one could resist, because he's such a cute dog. (I made an indecipherable squeal of happiness when he shuffled into the room.) Check out more photos I took of Brass after the jump.

A rare moment where his tongue isn't hanging out.

Ah, yes, there's the tongue!

Beagles are the best.

And they're part pig when it comes to food.

I never let my beagle Bradley run around the office because he does exactly what Brass does - turn over all the trash cans looking for a somethin' somethin' for that perpetually hungry belly. He would steal food out of your mouth if he got close enough. It's gotten him in a lot of trouble but we love him pieces anyway.

What an adorable dog. He just looks so happy!
Our German Shepherd use to "Help" us with the dishes too.

Almost everyone loves dogs (one way or another)! Here's to more adventures of Brass, the food hound.

"hurriedly waddled" -> those two words painted the perfect picture, hehe!

We've been successful in training our beagle, Ixi, not to go through the trash.. but anything you drop or leave on the ground she will eat before you can react! (Trying to train this out of her atm, for obvious reasons)

Tah, that is actually one thing we have under control. Start with putting her in a "lay position". Put a treat in front of her and say "Leave it." If she tries to take it, cover it with your hand and put her back into lay down position. When she is calm and paying attention to you about leaving the treat alone, you can tell her "Take it" and let her have it. Work with her for longer times of "Leave it."

If we drop something on the floor now, we're just quick to say, "Leave it." Our beagle will leave it alone. We always make sure to follow up with a treat for him afterwards though.

I have two Beagels (Reese and Wrigley), and I've come home to this same image no less than 200 times. It doesn't matter where I put the trash can.

That's the problem though, Varuna, we can't say leave it quick enough for her to register it and leave it before she gobbles it up. We're okay if she's a bit away before we drop something, but normally if there is food she is RIGHT there under our feet. (We don't have a dining room table yet, and when I'm sitting down on the floor to eat I try to keep her a good distance away from my food dish, but she sits under my boyfriends chair when he eats and he thinks I'm being mean to her if I tell her to go lay down farther away.) She's not allowed int he kitchen, which is a safe zone to drop stuff in, but if we are carrying our dish, and drop something it's gone

i love this dog. i think we're soulmates.

I was really curious what his face looked like w/o it being buried in the dishwasher or the rubbish can. Cute doggie. :)

I totally want to work at your office. *happy sigh*

i believe i met this dog at a san domenico truffle hunt in central park... if memory serves he did a decent job locating the white truffle!

Hm. Maybe work a take it a bit more, so she doesn't take ANYTHING without permission? I'm not sure if we could even train Bennett that well. He really likes pleasing us, but I'm sure if he had to choose between us and food, the food would win! :)

Good luck. I know how hard it can be.

Fleet Eater--yes, you did meet Brass at the San Domenico truffle hunt in Central Park. In fact, his appearance there was written up in the NY Times account of the event. Brass has also appeared on Good Morning, America, in a segment on dogs watching the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. He has definitely had more media exposure than the average beagle.

Just like my lab... two stomachs and half a brain, we say.
