'Next Food Network Star' Runner-Up Lisa Garza Also Handed Her Own Show
Yesterday, we told you that Next Food Network Star runner-up Adam Gertler got his own show from Food Network called Will Work for Food—even though he didn't win the series. Now, Lisa Garza, also a runner-up, tells us on her Facebook profile that she's "working on a TV deal with another network in NYC!!! Thanks to all my fans!!!" You're welcome, Lisa!!!!! Could it be Bravo or HGTV? The update also adds a shameless plug for her aprons, which are available at couturecaviar.com. The site is still under construction.

Congratulations Squinty! Another show on television that I won't watch.

Sci-fi network? Or selling her aprons on QVC.

I think I'd learn from her and get better recipes. I hope her new show is available everywhere. That woman has talent and personality. I think they contrived to make her the "evil one" on the first episode and I fell for it too, but started to really appreciate her as I learned more about her and saw how she handled herself. She has more talent in her pinky toe than her competitors, and deserves a chance. As far as the squinting - I'm thinking maybe she got some forehead botox for her TV appearance? I look forward to seeing what she has to offer.

That's great news Lisa!!!
It's about time Romulan Women had their own cooking show.
FastFoodCritic at 1:26PM on 08/05/08
I'm not surprised at all. And considering that one of her desires was to also have bits of decorating and design ideas interspersed in the cooking, I wouldn't be surprised if she ended up on HGTV or TLC doing something similar to our friend Sandy, but making the food from scratch and the crafts from high-end supplies.
As far as whether I'll watch it. Yeah, I'll check out the first few episodes and decide from there.
dbcurrie at 1:56PM on 08/05/08
Yeah...not for me. I don't enjoy TV enough for that.
Maybe I can find some reruns of Dallas....
thewrighttaste at 2:05PM on 08/05/08
I knew she was too obnoxious to stay off TV. I just cracked up laughing when I saw that Romulan comment as well, then I saw who it was from. Figures ;)
ratbuddy at 3:17PM on 08/05/08
I agree with you, PerkyMac -- out of all the contestants, I think I'd actually LEARN something from Lisa. Like I said in the Adam G. thread, I think she's more along the lines of an Ina/Nigella -- which is something I'd actually watch!
suthungirl at 3:29PM on 08/05/08
Hey ratbuddy! Hope you're doing well today. :)

"Barbie Cooks!"

I hope she makes tablescapes
Raphael at 3:49PM on 08/05/08
I also agree that the girl has talent even if she is a little tightly wound. And we all know Bobby Flay was enamored of her in a weird sort of way. We just have to remind her that THERE'S NO CRYING IN COOKING!
bessfour at 3:53PM on 08/05/08
@FFC ~ now I REALLY get it. Quite a resemblance, I have to admit. LOL
As another female with very straight hair, I thought it looked like a funky low-maintenance haircut, but I could almost see the bowl. ;-)
PerkyMac at 4:15PM on 08/05/08
I caught the show here and there when nothing else was on...she seemed like the best of the bunch to me, but really, it wasn't exactly an incredibly high bar to jump over. I guess having a contest full of disasters is better TV than having everyone do well.
TastyNewEngland at 4:22PM on 08/05/08
Are they bringing back Star Trek? :)
PicBuddy at 4:29PM on 08/05/08
Perky, no way is that 'do low maintenance. Did you see the shots of her with big rollers, and a blow dryer, and probably a hot comb and a ladies' maid to boot? Ms. Lisa is some high-maintenance chick. And she likes being that way.
annien at 6:59PM on 08/05/08
@annien ~ Another one of those - if you have natural curls, you want straight, if you have straight, you want curls. I'd die for curls! In that case, she is definitely high-maintenance. I liked her clothes and headbands, and can understand that she'd want to look her best for TV, but cooking in expensive clothes and high heels is ridiculous. I'd be willing to bet that she doesn't dress like that in her restaurant kitchen. I do think she knows food and that's what I care about in a cooking show, as long as the cook isn't super annoying. I have a long list of those, but most aren't real cooks. Time will tell, but I think she could be a winner.
PerkyMac at 7:46PM on 08/05/08
Amen PerkyMac - - she is the only one of the finalists that could teach me something I didn't already know. I miss that sort of serious knowledge base to draw from. I used to get that primarily from David Rosengarten's show (I think the name was "Taste" - but it's not even on in re-runs where I live). He was really mind blowing with his knowledge of ingredients and technique. Alton Brown is of course similarly equipped with information. It's curious to me how many folks get their aprons in a bunch over the appearance of Lisa. I'd like to see you send food back at a restaurant because you aren't moved by the chef's hair style. I like when people involved in food prep try to look presentable and clean. There's a Subway near my office I won't go near due to all the bohemians behind the counter with more holes in their bodies than the swiss cheese they serve. Sure, Lisa's squinting was admittedly odd at times, but I'll take that over being told for the millionth time that Aaron's cooking is "BIG AND BOLD Y'ALL." Wildly vacuous.

I watched the whole season of The Next Food Network Star, and thought either Lisa or Adam deserved to win. When Aaron won I was blown away. His first episode was lousy and not innovative AT ALL! At least Lisa and Adam brought something different to the table...Lisa's class and expertise and Adam's fun-loving goofy-hip talent. Lisa is the kind of person I would watch, just to aspire to her level. Sure, she's a little odd but interesting and intelligent. I like the quirkiness of her fine clothes and super type A personality. I'd also watch Adam because he's so darn entertaining. I hope the FN doesn't stomp out his personality by giving him a stupid show concept. I think he had the chops to do a cooking show, even if Bobby Flay didn't "believe" in his culinary knowledge. (Bobby is the self appointed all-knowing food God or something!) Go Adam! And as for Lisa, she' probably too classy for the FN anyway.
carolovesme at 4:51PM on 08/29/08
Squinty?? Tha's hilarious. I'm not watching either!
bmoranville at 4:21PM on 11/10/08
I totally agree with carolovesme. I couldnt figure out how Aaron won when I've watched people washing dishes and thought "hey that's more interesting than watching Aaron McCargo Jr". The guy is terrible and watching him on TV should be illegal as a form of torture.
Adam, on the other hand - he's great to watch. He has real personality - just like a previous winner, Guy Fieri.
Lisa, while she didn't have much personality, at least when she did show some spark, it wasn't so obviously forced like Aaron's is. Lisa's pilot was wonderful. Adam's pilot was wonderful. Aaron's... awful. Caroloveme is right - his pilot had no innovation at all, and his acting is terrible. Even the food he made was boring .... steak and plantains? Come on. Aaron didn't even come up with the NAME of the show. Heck he didnt even come up with his own nickname. He came up with nothing. Adam and Lisa at least had creative ideas. They must be creative since they stole Adam's idea after not picking him as the winner. And Lisa KNOWS food, just like another food network persona - Alton Brown (though Alton also has great personality, while Lisa has to work at it).
There was no real 'growth' shown with Aaron. From beginning to end, he was bland. Scratch that - he had this sort of growth. He went from being bland to being a bland person trying to force himself, and failing miserably, to have personality.
As for Bobby Flay not believing in Adam's cooking ability.... I have a hard time taking his word as an 'all knowing food god' after the debacle when he went up against Masahari Morimoto.
I'd probably watch Lisa's show if it's as good as her pilot was on TNFNS. I'd DEFINITELY watch Adam's show - any show he's on. He just -draws- you in. Aaron... well.. I really hope they stop the lovefest with him that the Food network judges had, realize you can't taste TV food, and give Big Daddy a time out.

I just watched the entire season in 2 days on a foodnetwork marathon (too much time on my hands?).
I liked all 3 of them for different reasons.
But the reason Aaron won is because he has a likeability that appeals to the masses. He is natural, unpretentious and a good cook.
All 3 of them could have a show, though would have different audiences.
Aaron is the most like Guy Fieri, a previous winner. Just an all around good guy and good cook.
Stacey Snacks at 12:41PM on 01/02/09
Aaron is like Guy Fieri? OW! My tender ears!
Aaron is nothing like Guy Fieri. Guy has personality. Aaron has no personality other than what other people tell him to be. Aaron is the least like Guy Fieri. Adam is the most like Guy. In fact, of the final three, Adam's the only one who has a TV personality like Guy's. Aaron is bland and uninteresting. His laugh is grating and iritating, and his ideas are non-existent. Can he cook? Maybe - sure. But until they invent Taste-o-vision, I don't care about that as much as I care about someone who actually draws you in to watch.
Aaron... being likeable among the masses? Hardly. He was the big loser in Vegas during the one part of the show where representatives OF the masses actually spoke. Adam was the hands-down winner.
Aaron should not have made it past Vegas. In Vegas, Adam was the big winner and Aaron was the loser. If it had come down to a 'vote by the masses', Aaron would have lost, and you know it.
