Updating Our Menus: New Site Navigation

A lot of the best chefs change their menus to reflect the seasons and to emphasize their most popular dishes. So we're doing the same thing! Here are a few tweaks we've made to the main navigation at the top of every page on Serious Eats, to help you get around the site more easily and maybe even discover some things you might have missed:

  • We changed the order of the links at the top of the page so that the most popular items (Home, Talk, Recipes) are first
  • All of the "Required Eating" content is seamlessly folded into the rest of the site. So, we've removed that tab, making room for a cool addition:
  • Columns! We know a lot of you love the recurring features on the site, so now all of these weekly columns are just a click away

As always, we want to hear what you think. If you've got suggestions or complaints about the changes we've made, let us know in the comments and we'll keep adjusting the site to be an even better home for Serious Eaters.

Love it. You guys just keep getting better and better.

Very cool...thanks for the new menu! The columns tab is really a good update.

love how you guys keep us happy! SE rocks!

Very Cool! But, when are you going to address the timeline issues???

@izatryt: It's in our queue. patience! :)

It really is a cool addition! Love it, love it, love it! Thanks for the new menu! Now, if we could get that edit button...:-)

Why can't we see the recent posts when in a topic?

Never mind. I figured it out.

Cool! I have a question. I mostly skim/read SE via my Google Reader, but that only pulls in the columns and whatnot... does "Talk" have its own RSS? I see some good topics usually but via Eater's Board Wrap instead of via SE's rss feed... just curious. Maybe I'm doing something wrong =)

@feistyfoodie: There is indeed a Talk RSS feed.

I'm glad to have the columns button. However, I always found it annoying that you couldn't browse the posts in a column back past one screen. For instance, if you click on Cocktail Concoctions, the oldest post shown is March 13, 2008, even though the column was running before then. Is there a way to get a link to older posts or something at the bottom of the page, so we you could read everything that had been written in the column?

Am I missing the "blog roll" that used to be in the Required Eating section?

@Kerosena: We moved our "blog roll" to a dedicated Links page.

@Enmalkm : We totally hear you. I went ahead and set up most of the columns to be date-based (and not a single page) so you can read the entire archives of the columns. For example: Cocktail Concoctions goes all the way back to July 2007 now.
