NectarineGate: Zuni Cafe's $8 Nectarine Dessert Is Actually $4.50

20080819-zuni-nectarine.jpg

Earlier this week, we told you about a supposed $8 Blossom Bluff Nectarine on the dessert menu at San Francisco's Zuni Cafe. Ridiculous surcharge for a single piece of fruit, right? A Zuni Cafe representative chimed in to clear up the misunderstanding: It should be $4.50. "The only $8.00 item on the menu was a pot de crème." Ridiculous still, but maybe less ridiculous? We will keep you updated with other NectarineGate details as they come through the wires. [via Eater SF]

Well at that price I'll get two nectarines!

i paid five dollars for a nectarine at the greenmarket last summer. was it worth it? i was so bemused when it was weighed and priced that i just paid for it.

it was a pretty good nectarine, not ecstasy inducing. i never went back to that particular vendor.

Ohhhh! $4.50! Now it's not absurd.

/sarcasm

I'd feel really stupid sitting at a nice table in a fancy pants restaurant in my favorite outfit, opening my mouth like a hippo and trying not to drip nectarine juice on myself.

Is this a restaurant's little joke to try and make its' patrons look foolish?

I guess it is the fruit equivalent of the mark-up on wine. Come to think of it, wine is made of fruit... so I guess it's OK then.

Yeesh. The least they could have done was offer to slice it...

It's still a jip!!!!

this is the most ludicrous thing i've ever seen.
at least cut up the bloody thing, throw on some garnish and add a dollop of whipped cream. at LEAST.

damn, at least plate it nicely. look at it, it's just rolling around on that plate. i bet it fell off the plate in the kitchen a few times before it got to the table.

oh my gosh, why am i still thinking this must be a joke?

That Zuni Cafe rep is a master of damage control. Compared to $8, $4.50 is a completely reasonable price for 1 single unadorned nectarine. That's almost 50% off. What a mind blowing deal!

@yogurtsoda: perhaps The Onion recently and secretly acquired Eater.

$4.50 isn't unreasonable. It's the presentation that is just so very sad.

$4.50. For a piece of fruit. It's STILL RIDICULOUS.

Perhaps it's the labor and training taken to prepare this complicated dish.

Thought you might want to know Blossum Bluff is an orchard in Parlier, CA...
