McCain Frozen Foods Co. Launches Ad Campaign with Presidential Candidate

20080825-mccain-foods.jpgThe advertising team for Canadian-based McCain, the frozen and packaged spuds company, lucked out when an eponymous politician decided to run for president. They will capitalize on the name recognition with an election-themed campaign called "Why McCain should be in the White House," according to Advertising Age.

Since McCain (the food one) doesn't use trans-fatty oils, one campaign slogan will be: "McCain goes to war over oil." Another one: "McCain brings 'smiles' to millions," referencing the company's frozen potatoes with cut-out smiley faces.

The company hopes to keep the campaign alive until early November, unless events with McCain (the human being one) make the ads seem old.

Considering McCain Foods in now the cause for recent listeria deaths in Canada, I doubt they should be doing any advertising other than what they already have running - which are apologies to Canadian citizens: the rest of which they should be storing for the big payouts that they should be giving in restitution .... as far as we Canadians probably care; the US can 'swallow up' all the McCain foods now have to offer

Too bad a McCain is also the head of Maple Leaf which is having a huge recall on meat due to listeriosis (sp?) The McCains are a huge food industry family in this country - same as the Westons, who own Loblaws and all its subsidiaries.

Cute idea I must say......

Yes all u americans do not forget that McCain's foods and Maple Leaf are all one umbrella of companies....and it is not just frozen foods they deal in; I would say they are the largest in producing not just foods, (fresh, pre-cooked, frozen, and canned) under various labels including those of McCain and Maple Leaf as well as the no-name products that are sold in various other large supermarkets.....Run as fast you can McCain (I don't know who should run faster, your prez-to-be or our food conglomerate no longer on the top of anyone's shopping list)!!

Not that I would have ever been inclined to buy their processed crap to begin with, but now, especially not.

Ba-dum-bump-CHEE!

When will Canadians stop looking to the US for validation?

Incidently, @Simon, I'm with you!

McCain should NOT be in the White House. Don't even start on this one....

"Everyone knows Bush if full of beans, and everyone's waiting for 'em to can it. So we did." - Potential slogan for Bush's Baked Beans?

Well, if they're so eager to make the connection, then I'm sure people will act accordingly.

Couple things wrong with this article and the resulting comments. While McCain Foods USA is a subsidiary of McCain Foods Limited in Canada, McCain Foods Limited is in no way associated or responsible for this campaign. That wasn't very clearly spelled out in the first sentence. (looks like someone needs a brush-up Reporting 101 course) That correlation lead to comments about McCain Foods and listeria deaths. It is Maple Leaf Foods that is having the issue. Yes, the other side of the McCain family is the controlling interest in that business, and some of the principles of Maple Leaf sit on the McCain board, but they are completely separate companies. This correlation is not warranted or deserved.

Remember, the head of Maple Leaf foods is a McCain. They are rife in the food business in Canada.....

Maureen - consider this scenario: You own a restaurant. Your brother owns a food company. You have an e-coli or salmonella outbreak in your restaurant. Do you include your brother's company in the blame? No, you do not.
