Visit the Indiana State Fair: Fried Food and Crawling Through a Colon Involved

20080813-instatefair-videos.jpg

The Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis is already in session, but you have until Sunday, August 17, to enjoy the best of what it has to offer: deep-fried fair food and a giant, diseased colon.

Indulge in the fair's wide array of deep fried foods, foods on sticks, and deep fried foods on sticks. How about the 2008 Indiana State Fair signature food contest winner, deep-fried bananas foster cheesecake on a stick? Count me in. Indystar.com describes other offerings, from typical corn dogs to not-so-typical chocolate-covered chicken stick.

After getting your fill of fair food, visit "Coco" the Colossal Colon, a 40-foot long, four-foot tall model of a human colon "designed to educate about colorectal cancer and other diseases of the colon." Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, and more—Coco's got it all! Crawl through the tunnel to see what horrors could come to your colon if you don't maintain a healthy lifestyle. That probably entails not eating a lot of fair food, but one day of stuffing your face with funnel cakes and pulled pork sandwiches shouldn't kill you.

If you can't make it to the fair, watch these videos after the jump from IndyStar.com about fair-goers' favorite foodstuffs and the journey through the giant colon after the jump.

Awesome. I cannot tell you how many times I've sat at home just wishing there was a giant colon somewhere that I could crawl thru.

@Robyn & FFC...Thanks for making me laugh! Add a walk-thru esophagus to the lineup and I'm so making a roadtrip to Indiana this weekend. :O

We had the colon here at my hospital for a couple of days - it's actually a pretty interesting experience. I'd rather spend my time with the corndogs, though.

Is "coco the colon" kind of like a log ride at an amusement park?
It'd be great with the splashdown at the end! wheeee!

LOL!

"log ride" LMFAO!!!!!

I'm going to the State Fair Saturday. I'm planning on corn, ribeye, pork chop and some homemade potato chips. Probably a lemon shake-up or two, also. I think I'll bypass the colon.

@IndyGal - "bypass the colon" - LOL and kudos! ;0

@bisbee - "log ride" and "splashdown" - too funny!

I think I'd bypass the log ride, 'specially if there are good vittles to be had.

Back around 1970, an organization I belonged to sold corn-on-the-cob at the IN State Fair....wow has Fair food changed...I'm driving to Indy for the colon this year. Most likely I'll be eating an Elephant Ear, too.

My wife and I went there last Sunday... Beautiful day and an absolute feeding frenzy. I'm almost ashamed how much stuff we had, but we did split most things so that's OK, right? :)

Had a ribeye sandwich, pork chop, spiral "taters", a giant corn dog (it's huge) two lemon shake-ups and two of the deep-fried bananas foster on a stick and a fried twinkie. All were excellent. I was disappointed to see they still don't have a vendor that offers a "real" breaded pork tenderloin (the greatest sandwich on earth, btw), just fritters that they call a tenderloin.

I had so much fat and cholesterol my extremities were a little cold from the lack of circulation.

After passing through COCO the Colon, you can literally say ...you felt like crap! :)

mmmm. pork tenderloin sandwich. (yeah the deep fried schnitzel on a bun kind with mustard...drooling on keyboard)
