Calcium: The Tongue's Sixth 'Taste' Discovered

20080821-calcium-ca.jpgYour tongue might be able to taste calcium, according to scientists like Michael Tordoff, the behavioral geneticist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. And how does it taste? "Calcium-y," Tordoff said. "There isn't a better word for it."

A sour bitterness is the best description, which could explain why certain people don't like collard greens, bok choy, kale, or bitter melon. They are all calcium-rich vegetables.

I loves me some calcium! Kale, bok choy, collard greens... Yum! What about calcium in dairy?

I love the greens alright, but I can say that when I take those activia chewable calcium thingies, the initial flavor is chocolate, but if I don't get all down immeidately and some gets stuck to my teeth there's a definite yucky bitter flavor.

Can tell the difference between orange juice with calcium and juice without don't like the juice with the calcium..
