Soy May Be Hazardous to Sperm

20080724-soybean.jpgA study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that modest soy consumption may significantly decrease sperm production due to the soy's isoflavones, the chemicals that act similar to estrogen. However, the study points out that soy consumption is higher in Asia, where there isn't a decreased fertility problem.

Raw, unfermented soy is the evil stuff (edamame, tofu.) Fermented soy is fine though (soy sauce, miso, tempeh, etc...)

The results for these "studies" seem to come out every week, some sponsor by the dairy industry.

So why does China have a population problem if soy is the problem? And why is the blame always on"unfermented soy"? Chinese people eat ALOT of unfermented soy products, more so then fermented soy, yet that the country is overpopulated. The Japanese eat more fermented soy products and they have a birth rate decline.

Hmm....edamame or a vasectomy? YOU decide!

People shouldn't forget that most pork and chicken are fed mostly soy.

Could this be a genetic thing as well? Just like some people have the genetics to digest milk as an adult and others don't. Could some people react more to the hormone like parts of soy and others not?

"Problem" : Half as much sperm.

Solution: Screw twice as much?

I'm talking out of my a**, but I'm guessing that an initial dose of isoflavones might mess things up for a bit, but I'll bet your body re-equilibrates shortly thereafter.

I don't think the birth rate decline is related to soy consumption, at least in Japan, but more the same reason US and other more industrialized societies began to see less and less families with 17 children. There is no need to have many children when a large portion of the society moves away from an agrarian way of life.
