Serious Eats Food on the Road: New York to Cape Cod
Louis' Lunch and Pepe's Pizza, two of the stops on any serious eater's road trip from New York up I-95 to Cape Cod.
I am currently wrapping up a week of vacation on Cape Cod—Martha's Vineyard, to be exact. We drove up earlier this week. This post is about all the good food I have discovered en route from New York City to Cape Cod. From burgers to pizza, hot dogs to fried clams, there are plenty of serious eats to be had on the road from New York to Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
Consider the following:
Walter's Hot Dogs (Mamaroneck, New York)
A Westchester institution, Walter's is the only hot dog stand in America that looks like a pagoda. There's nothing Asian about Walter's hot dogs, which are a tasty blend of pork, beef, and get this, veal. 937 Palmer Avenue, Mamaroneck NY 10543; waltershotdogs.com
Johnny's (Mount Vernon, New York)
It may be hard to find, but Johnny's fine thin-crusted pizza is worth the effort. Good heroes here as well. Whole pies only. 30 West Lincoln Avenue, Mt. Vernon NY 10550
Pepe's Pizza (Fairfield, Connecticut)
The lines at the Fairfield Pepe's may be just as long as those at the original branch in New Haven, but the pizza is every bit as good. 238 Commerce Drive, Fairfield CT 06825
Super Duper Weenie (Fairfield, Connecticut)
Connecticut is fertile territory for hot dog lovers, and Super Duper Weenie makes a mighty fine grilled hot dog. 306 Black Rock Turnpike, Fairfield CT; superduperweenie.com
Louis' Lunch (New Haven, Connecticut)
Who cares if Louis' Lunch really served the first hamburger in America? The burgers are unique, served on toast smeared with a Cheese Whiz–like spread and cooked on what can only be described as a vertical antique version of the George Foreman grill. 261-263 Crown Street, New Haven CT 06510
Pepe's Pizza and Modern (New Haven, Connecticut)
If you're a serious eater you know all about Pepe's in New Haven (157 Wooster Street, New Haven CT 06511). You might not know Modern, which serves a fine pie baked in an oven fueled by oil. (874 State Street, New Haven CT 06511)
Al Forno (Old Saybrook, Connecticut)
Not the grilled pizza emporium in Providence, Rhode Island, but the New Haven-style pizza place in a nondescript shopping center right off Exit 66 on Route 95. 1654 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook CT 06475
Sea Swirl (Mystic, Connecticut)

If you get the chance try the Rhode Island version of clam chowder, more diet friendy and better than any other ;) Youmight also try The Pizza Lady in stonington Ct. she used to sell pizza's door to door in the town I grew up in, you would order 1/2 or whole sheet one week and it would be delivered the next. Now she has a shop and her pizza is better than ever, at least it was last summer. She makes a "soupy" pizza you have to try! I dont even like sausage on pizza but that is to die for! all homemade fresh ingredients. I think she even makes her own "soupy" sopressata;)

I love Rhode Island clam chowder but it's such a simple dish, I find it's either really, really awesome or kinda lousy. Definitely depends on how good the ingredients are.
I've only been to Super Duper Weenie once but the split, grilled dogs have a lot of flavor. Gotta go back sometime when I'm in the area, there's waaay to many varieties. In a good way of course.

What did you eat on Cape Cod. As a transplanted NewYorker i now live on cc and am curious what you found. sounds like you found alot of good stuff in ct. in a 20 to 60 mile radius of eachother. looking fwd to your reply Amy.....small kitchen big view.....

OMG grew up on Walter's Hot Dogs. However you missed some serious eats, Modern Pizzeria, 12 Russell Avenue, New Rochelle 914-633-9479. The best brick oven pizza ever (and everything else Italian). The store was originally a bakery back in the day (1940's maybe) and when the owner died his wife and extended family took over and started to make pizza plus added a bar (very 1950's) and they all lived upstairs. It was bought about 20 years ago and the new owners have kept the integrity of "the pie", renovated and expended the menu. Check it out. Get off the Thruway pass the Thruway Diner and there is Russell Avenue. Not too much of detour.
