Eggsperimental Ice Cream

Oh, the crazy, tasty things kids do these days. Albany, New Zealand-based gelato maker James Oliver of Zest Gelato is only 22 years old, but his unconventional flavors are already making a mark. His bacon-and-egg-flavored ice cream won a silver medal at this year's New Zealand Ice Cream Awards, while his manuka honey gelato and his toasted coconut, lime, and mascarpone ice cream both grabbed golds. He also won a silver medal for his poached pear and blue cheese ice cream, which contains pears Oliver poaches himself and chunks of blue cheese. This is not your father's French vanilla. Isn't bacon and egg ice cream one of Heston Blumenthal's most famous dishes?

Yes, bacon-and-egg ice cream is one of Heston Blumenthal's dishes at Fat Duck. He even showed how he made it on TV.

Given that the Fat Duck version's been around since at least 2002, bacon-and-egg ice cream isn't exactly experimental. Things do move slower in NZ, I guess.

i think bacon and cream are diametrically opposed and bacon ice cream is ripping a hole in the fabric of the universe.

Hi, It's James here, from the above article.
Yes, Absolutely the bacon and egg comes from Heston. I have never claimed to have invented the recipe. Mine is a different take on Hestons concept, not a copy of the recipe. Like any Cooking, if 2 chefs create something from a similar recipe, the end product will come out differently because it will incorporate each chefs own flair..... it was for a laugh because the category of the ice cream awards has been very bland for years.......

@Jamesoliver: Thanks for weighing in. Now ... how 'bout a pizza ice cream? Please?

pizza ice cream? il see what i can do ;-)

we are making a whole heap of gelato with balsamic vinegar at present. tastes amazing. Chocolate & Mandarin Balsamic anyone?
