Chocolate-Covered Bacon for Breakfast

20080724-goodmorning-bacon.jpgPretzels, strawberries, and bananas do their share of bathing in chocolate, but bacon? These indulgent strips are a new item at Marini's Candies in Santa Cruz, California, brought to our attention by Serious Eater Fast Food Critic. Do we consider this pushing bacon's limits? Or accentuating its beauty?

Yet another sign that bacon is taking over the world.

I would note that chocolate covered bacon showed up on the most recent episode of Food Network's "Dinner Impossible" (Michael Symon's first episode, I believe) as well.

I would absolutely try it, but then I'm OK with anything bacon-y!

...which I would have seen the video for had I scrolled down the front page. Yeah, I'm a dork :-)

I have to admit a bit of a pet peeve of mine is when things are both "New!" and yet already considered "Famous".

"Buy some of our gimmick bacon!"

I grew up going to Marini's and have never had a single piece of "candy" I didn't like from them. I'm sure this chocolate covered bacon wouldn't change my mind.

Now we can have bacon for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert ... a perfect day in my book.

While I haven't had this particular mix of chocolate and bacon, I have tried other bacon/chocolate concoctions and frankly, the chocolate overpowers the bacon..and all you taste is a mild saltiness.. I want bacon to taste strongly of..well..bacon.. I do like sweet bacons, but not so sweet that it overpowers the smokiness and the delicate taste of pork fat.

Next up: Bacon 'Smores!

I think I'll try adding candied bacon to my next batch of brownies or chocolate chip cookies. The flavor should be out of this world.

At my mom and stepdad's, everyone fights over the candied thick-cut bacon that's put out with holiday meals. At first taste, it's a little odd, but it grows on you.

I live in Santa Cruz and I think I'll have to go downtown this week and see if they still have this. I just tried the Vosges bacon bar and it is wonderful.
