R.I.P. Some of Our Favorite 600 Starbucks

20080714-starbucks-icon.jpgWill your hometown 'bucks get bulldozed over? Here's a list of the first round of a projected 600 closings that will occur between now and the first half of 2009. Each closure date is contingent on operational and contractual factors—and how fast they can sell the DVDs 75 percent off. Adieu #13745, my hometown branch in Laguna Beach.

not a single manhattan location closing, sigh. i wish they would ALL go away, the sooner the better.

That list isn't even close to 600 stores; just the stores closing by 31 July.

why don't they just merge with MickeeDee's, thereby creating "no go" zones...???

@rheogs: Thanks for the correction, the post has been updated.

There is a bit of irony that their webpage listing still has the mouseover javascript of 'Got a great idea? Tell us!" I wonder how many people will click it to tell them not to close their favorite location...

This is merely a drop in the bucket. 600 stores out of 3,891 nationwide and over 13,000 worldwide isn't so bad. Strangely, the two Starbucks that are a block away from each other in my neighborhood are NOT getting closed.

My SIL works at a SB and they are closing a few near her (not the ones on opposite corners of an intersection though...) so instead of letting any employees go they are smooshing them into the open stores so everyone gets a big cut in hours. It makes no sense at all, especially for folks who have worked there a long time/deserve the hours.

This is where all the 'employee care and fringe benefits' are gonna bite them in the rear, as at least 3 employees from my SIL's location alone (including SIL) are just going to quit. So they lose managers and long-term employees so they don't have to be 'bad' and fire anyone at all. Dumb.

NO restaurant/shop/beverage place needs that many locations.

Oh Lord! Whatever will we do with all those baristas running around?! I'm sorry but I never took that word seriously.

I went to one of the three SB in a five block radius of my work yesterday (Day #2: Vivanno) and I don't think I will ever go to that one again. I waited 10 minutes for a simple iced coffee. The barista gave my ice coffee to a man behind me and then gave me one that wasn't even full.

A man in front of me asked to speak to a manager, and the baristas were interrogating him, "Why do you want to talk to a manager?" They said they would not summon the manager for him until he told them what he wanted to discuss.

The atmosphere was tense and unpleasant all around. I blame the Vivanno!
