The Next Food Network Star, Episode 3 Recap: The Kelseybot

Top left: Kelsey yucks it up for Martha. Top right: Kelseybot explains her potato dish. Bottom left: Kelseybot turns on the waterworks. Bottom right: The judges aren't having any of it.
I have to admit, I haven't been paying that much attention to this show. I missed the first ep completely and only really caught up on the second one via Erin's recap last week, along with some online videos of the action.
Even most of the way through this episode, I was like, OMG, will it ever end?!?
But then, in the last five minutes, all became clear. I am now a devoted follower. As long as Kelsey remains on the show, that is.
I cannot get enough of her robotic, forced delivery. It is just insane. It's equal parts Rachael Ray (fast and cheap eats) and Ron Popeil (wide-eyed robotic peppiness) with some Home Shopping Network thrown in for good measure.
Like, check out her delivery after the Mini Challenge, which was to present "your culinary point of view," as expressed via the humble potato. It appears after the jump, along with spoilers, of course.

Isn't that insane? The judges are totally right. It's like she's doing a parody of a Food Network celeb. She'd be right at home on SNL.
The two other notable contestants in this round are Lisa Garza and Adam. Adam because he rocks his "on-camera" explanation of what his dish is all about:
Link: Adam Breaks It Down [RedLasso]
And Lisa is notable because she went in worried she was going to talk too much but instead talks for only 15 seconds of her allotted one minute time, leaving 45 seconds of awkward dead air.
The Main Challenge
The main challenge is the "Food Product Challenge." The contestants have to "put themselves in a jar." Basically by creating a self-branded, packaged food item that expresses their culinary POVs. The contestants have to make, package, and distro their products to 50 food buyers from food stores all across the country. They have one hour.
Not much goes on here, and the prep work is pretty boring. Most of the contestants are pretty boring, I think. You really don't get a feel for any of them, except for, say, Lisa Garza, Adam, and Kelsey. Anyway, they finish, the food prep, and now they have 30 minutes to get their presentations ready. By the way, I love that all their packaging is basically just a boring sans-serif font on an orange label, slapped on a jar. They're really going to have to use their BS skills to sell the products, because the packaging ain't cutting it. The buyers and the judges mill around the "booths."
And, crazy! Martha Stewart arrives. If anyone knows how to become a brand it's her.
Lisa seems to redeem herself a bit from her disastrous start with her sharp marketing skills. The buyers seem to like her, and Martha digs that Lisa's namechecking a sustainable farm in Iowa.
I can't wait to see how Kelsey does with Martha. And, I get my wish:
Link: More Ronco than Rachael [RedLasso]
OMG. Adam goes nuts with a song. WTF is he doing? But then I get myself out of the Top Chef mindset, where it's all about the food, and into the NFNS headspace, where entertainment value is key. And I think Adam has been the most entertaining this episode. From his oversharing at the beginning to his helpful smoking-meat-with-corn-cobs advice to his harmonica antics, singing a blue song for Martha.
Who's Safe
Adam wins safety via the potato Mini Challenge. He really did do the best in personalizing the story behind the dish (video above), even though you get the feeling that everyone liked Aaron's honey-scallion-bacon-wrapped potatoes the most. (I'm kinda craving those things right now myself.) Lisa wins immunity via the packaging challenge. Aaron wins special Martha-based immunity because she liked his vinaigrette.
The Elimination
OMG. Kelseybot is in overdrive. The minute she says "Um, I really am so passionate about ... " Oh, nevermind. I can't even describe it. All I can say is that the girlfriend and I were both watching this part and burst out laughing when Kelsey went into her spiel:
Link: Kelsey Breaks Down [RedLasso]
Halfway through this ep, she annoyed me so much I was hoping she'd get the boot. But the scene above clinched it for me. I'm hooked. I'll keep tuning in each Sunday to see if Kelsey ever says anything sincere or natural.
Oh, I suppose you want to know who got booted. Obviously not Kelsey.
Jeffrey got canned. He just didn't make a compelling product or really sell himself. I can't say I'm disappointed. I only wish they could kick off two at once, because Jennifer's about as dull as dirt, too. But she does the whole "cooking with kids" thing, which is popular and might save her hide yet again.

I missed this ep, but I've been calling Kelsey "The SNL Cheerleader" since ep 1. I'll bet she could do a spot on imitation of the annoying girls - Rachael and Aunt Sandy. Maybe that will win it for her? I can't believe you didn't mention Nipa. No grandstanding Diva this week? Sounds like Lisa is continuing to redeem herself. I liked the teen boy who broke down in tears - forget his name. So cute. I have to watch for a rerun, even though the whole STAR search is a joke.

I love Kelsey, just for the Provo-ness she brings to the show. I'm pretty sure she's being sincere in her crazy cheerfulness, although she is more peppy on this show than she's ever been on her own (I think there are clips on her show's website). Having lived in Provo for several years now, and been around BYU students for most of them, I've met and known dozens like her.
(YAY! for moving to CA in 6 weeks!!)

I enjoyed Jennifer's 'I'm wanting to teach kids how to eat more healthy pizza....except this gross display I created for you judges here which isn't healthy because it's slathered with grayish looking paper mache' explanation. She is unremarkable to me, if you ask me tomorrow I probably won't remember her name.
Adam on the other hand, gives me douche chills... can I say that here? His shtick annoys me more than the fact that Lisa looks like she has no eyes when she's in her "look how cute I am when I'm speaking about myself and fashion zone".
I did call Jeffrey's demise though, but like you, I wished for 2 executions... I mean eliminations.
Aaron's potato dish looked fabulous, he should have won both challenges IMHO.

@PerkyMac: Heh. That's right. She's totally got the annoyance factor of Melanie Hutsell's cheerleader maybe mixed with some of the manic facial contortions of Rachel Dratch.
@Southern_bella: I guess I missed Adam's shtick in earlier episodes. I thought the oversharing was a bit much in the first bit, but it was what the judges wanted, so in that respect, he did nail it. Who knows.

@Adam - to me he should be trying out for Last Comic Standing rather than Next Food Network Star. I was most annoyed by his loud serenade to Martha Stewart. It's one thing to be personable, but he reminds me of one of those 1 man band guys. schmuck here
There are already too many audibly offensive personalities on the Food Network, for once I'd like to see someone that doesn't make my brow furrow when I watch. (is that even possible?)
Southern_bella at 8:21AM on 06/16/08
I'm watching this show b/c I watch it every year and there's nothing else on TV...but seriously, I don't think any of these contestants are that great.
Steamy Kitchen at 8:22AM on 06/16/08
what a hilarious set of photos for the top of this story. i think they're being appropriately tough on the contestants...I much prefer this to top chef
z911empire at 8:57AM on 06/16/08
Seriously, Nipa is their best bet at a South Asian chef? *gag* Lisa still kind of weirds me out, but her food looks fantastic. So far I think I like Aaron best. I was liking Adam at the start, but I'm already tired of him. I loved how Kelsey was crying through her huge smile - classic.
DJ Dedd at 9:25AM on 06/16/08
Okay, Kelsey is totally entertaining in a pathetic sort of way. But the thought of them possibly giving her a show is really scary. I promised myself that I wouldn't watch the rest of the series after episode one. But then I cheated and watched episode two. I had my husband remove it from the DVR list, but what if he didn't? If it's there, I'll be drawn to watch it like a car wreck on the highway.
puppymomma at 9:43AM on 06/16/08
My favorite moment of the night: Jennifer's "low carb" pizza covered in mashed potatoes!
AnaisKoi at 10:20AM on 06/16/08
I don't even have cable, so I can't watch this show. I just skimmed this article and thought to myself, these photos look like an SNL parody starring Rachel Dratch in a blonde wig! And I was kind of right!
LiveToEat at 10:25AM on 06/16/08
Honestly can't stand this show... Bob Tuschman and Susie Fogelson should go back to their day jobs because they're dreadful to watch on TV. Let the current talent be the sole judges. Because of these 2 people the show is just unwatchable, at least for me.
suburbangourmet at 10:54AM on 06/16/08
I couldn't sleep and caught a little of the end. I heard Susie Fogelson say "vinegar-ette". She must be friends with Aunt Shamdra. Before they eliminate any more contestants, Bobby Flay must eliminate Susie and Bob Tuschman and replace them with sensible people who know great food and great cooking/tv abilities.
FN, you need new "suits"! Seriously!!!!
PerkyMac at 12:27PM on 06/16/08
Oh, and looking at the deep plunge of Susie's neckline (below breastline?), she must be the one doing wardrobe for the plunging cleavage attire showing gobs of boobs on the boob tube.
PerkyMac at 1:05PM on 06/16/08
The thing I hate most about Bob and Susie is their annoying insistence on stating the obvious in way too many words. Susie said something to the effect of, "...when she said that stuff about low-carb, and there were potatoes on the pizza... *I just don't think that was a very smart thing to bring up.*" Really, Susie? Thanks for taking 10 minutes to say what could have been accomplished with, "low carb?" and a grimace.
BangieB at 1:23PM on 06/16/08
@PerkyMac
nothing wrong with that... :)

Kelsey: "I just don't want to be annoying..."
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
mangabanga at 3:55PM on 06/16/08
It's SO too bad that SNL is on summer break as this show is prime for one of their skits. I cannot stand Kelsey, she is like one of those people who always gets straight As and finally someone is calling her out for being fake. FN already HAS a perky, 30-minute meal chick and she's actually *less* annoying, and I can't believe I'm saying that.
Someone needs to give ms. fashionista lisa a makeover so she quits piling on the white cover-up around her eyes, she just looks like an anime character.
And I agree Adam took his stupid act a little too far. It smacked of desperate and annoying. Nobody on this show seems to actually have any talent!
And WHY did Nipa even make it to the show? Surely there are more interesting Indian cooks out there, and ones who would actually be willing to make something BESIDES Indian food now and again?
rockandroller at 3:10PM on 06/17/08
I take offense to the straigh As comment! :-)
Surely, Kelsey got Cs and cried about it and did everything she could to improve upon it, to no avail.
Did you notice how many times she says peoples' names when she talks to them? The must have said "Martha" 10 times in the 2 minute conversation she had with her.
I'm starting to like Lisa. It will sadden me to see her take a slide in the kitchen whenever that episode happens.
puppymomma at 7:22PM on 06/17/08
Thank God! I was begining to wonder if I was alone in my Kelsey hate. I searched for people who hated Kelsey and I found this blog. Ok, maybe you "love" her, but at least you see her as a robot. I can't take this gal. She's like Racheal Ray meets Sandra Lee meets Elle Woods meets SNL. And her comment about being passionate about food, television, and food on television made me gag. The worst thing is that she's winning "fan favorite" on the Food Network site by a wide margin, and the judges seem to be warming up to her alot. I'm frightened she's gonna have her own show. Maybe if she does, and it tanks, Food Network will learn its lesson and give us something DIFFERENT next time.
AgentSpooky at 4:07PM on 06/27/08
Sorry but Kelsey is just NOT my cup of tea - let's face it - the only one who has been a hit has been Guy - and why - because he's himself! Believe me - I've met him and what you see is what you get!!! In fact - I would choose Aaron over Adam - Adam is just a train wreck - and Lisa - heaven help us - she's another train wreck in Pucci shoes!!!! Where do they get these people? FN needs REAL people - not "bobbleheads" - sorry if I'm offending anyone but I would take Emeril any day!
Starrrent at 9:11PM on 07/06/08
Oh thank God there are people who see the light about lil squeak squeak Kelsey. FN already has a over stimulated show (R.R.). They want to put 2 shows on like that? Are they in with a pharmacutical company hoping viewers to buy valuim after watching these super hyper people? I don't know why but Kelsey has got to be the most annoying person. I was so glad when she got "da boot"!! Lisa I liked, she seemed to know her stuff, but she had this arrogance, all this talk of her designer cloths and shoes turned me off, who cares, your there to cook not talk about fashion. Jennifer was a joke, I was annoyed how she always brought up her kid, yeah she missed her, but to mention the kid all the time....Why even join a contest? Nipa didn't seem into it. I am looking forward to when FN puts a show on Indian cooking, just not Nipa hosting it. Yes her specialty is Indian, but she needs to know a little of all styles. Adam was okay he had a good personality, he entertained me with his humor, his food eh mediocore. Aaron I really liked, at the end he shined. Looking forward to watching his show.
