Vintage Cereal Box Gallery

20080630-cerealgallery.jpg

Good morning, serious eaters! Here's a good way to start the day—and the week. A crazy gallery of old-school cereal boxes. I think my faves here are King Vitaman and Tutti Frutti Flavored Twinkles. They remind me of the days when I'd eat nothing but Fruity Pebbles when it came to cereal. (I can't believe my mom let me get away with that.) What was your cereal of choice as a kid—or even today?

Where are the Pink Panther Flakes????? My brother and I would kill a whole box anytime my mom went out and left us home alone... LOL.

king vitaman! have breakfast with the king!

wpw, i can't believe how quickly that popped into my head as soon as i saw the box.

these days if i have cereal it's my own homemade granola or the old fashioned kinid of oatmeal.

What was really best about these sugar frosted bomb cereals (although I'm too young to remember these) was the prizes in the boxes--I noticed that on some of these covers. I recall getting a pickle in the shape of a whistle for a joint Burger King and cereal promo once, plus matchbox cars, candy, and so forth.

Some of these really look like Wacky Packages to me, particularly Kaboom and Twinkles

Yummmm. Quisp!!! Love the cereal and love the box.

Haha Sugar Jets: Truth in Advertising!

I'm with you on the Fruity Pebbles. I probably could still kill a bowl if left to my own devices...

My grandparents used to buy us Circus Fun. It was the only cereal I'd ever seen that came in a black box.

Raisin Bran has always been a favorite of mine. As a child and as an adult.

Honey combs, cinnamon toast crunch, apple jacks were always great.

Boo Berry or Frankenberry.
today,tomorrow,forever.

I used to eat Cocoa Pebbles. I loved them! But as I've gotten older and less tolerant of sugery cereals, I haven't had them for breakfast in years.

I do, however, use them in my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. I gives the cookies an extra chocolate crisp kick. Yum!

Does anyone else remember the big "rivalry" between Quisp and Quake? I remember the big contest they had between the two two figure out which one was more popular. I just read that the ads were created by Jay Ward of Rocky and Bullwinkle fame.

I do remember the rivalry between Quisp and Quake. I believe Quisp won. For a prize, Quisp got his own pet, a space kangaroo, which came with its own cereal, Quangeroo. It didn't last long.

Quisp totally ruled over Quake. Although Cap'n Crunch was my first love. My brother and I sent away for these oddly-shaped Cap'n Crunch bowls. His was red, mine was blue, and nothing in the world could induce me to ever, EVER, eat from that red bowl. Cooties, you know. Li'l brother would typically eat about 4 bowls of cereal a day, without milk. He tried everything on the market, but I don't think he's eaten cereal since college. Reached his quota, I guess!

Oh sweet, sweet Quisp. How I loved thee. Several years back I'd order it online six boxes at a tiem and have it shipped...I wonder if I can still do that.

Kaboom was ALWAYS a fave, as was The King.

You can't beat breakfast with the king.

I used to imagine that King Vitaman and Mother Nature from the Imperial Margarine commercials were involved in a passionate, tempestuous affair.

YIKES! King Vitaman looks like the scary Uncle you keep your kids away from.

King Vitaman RULED!!! What a flashback!

King Vitaman was great- somehow the name didn't sound like a sugar-bomb cereal so it was on the 'approved' list!

i highly recommend picking up a copy of Krazy Kid's Food by Dan Goodsell. it's one of those journal sized Taschen titles and filled with one fantastic image after another.

Dude--check out the stash--a royal racing coach, a coloring book, and a nursery rhyme game can all be yours if you just get to the bottom of the boxes fast enough!

I forgot all about Apple Jacks! loved em as a kid, but my fave was and is Grape Nuts. hot or cold its rocks ;)
