Everything's Peachy in Georgia Right Now

At Lane Southern Orchards, peaches are categorized by peak juicy date.
In Georgia it’s now officially peach season, which runs until mid-August. This fluorescent orange-bordered sign inside the Lane Southern Orchards market shop in Fort Valley, Georgia, goes into more peach detail than the average stone fruit–eater probably knows. A peach is a peach is a peach, right? Not at this 2,700-acre peach orchard, where the varieties Lane Luck and Cary Mac are peachiest now. Inside the market, the drupe comes in multiple forms: butter, marmalade, salsa, and ice cream at the attached café.

I grew up in Atlanta. One of my favorite summer family memories is piling into the car and heading to the Lane Orchards for the day. I would get the chance to stuff myself with peach ice cream and my mother would buy many many cheap overripe peaches and take them home to freeze so we could have peach cobbler all year long. Thanks for bringing back sweet memories!

Can any Serious Eater give a primer on some of these varieties? This Yankee, regrettably, wouldn't know a Lane Luck from a Candy Mac or a Fireprince from a White Lady.

Oh man... it won't be peach season in New York for months. I'm may have to plan a peach field trip to the deep south next year...
