Photo of the Day: Shave Ice at Ward Farmers' Market

I know it's just a pile of finely shaved ice soaked with flavored syrup in a paper cup, but ... no, it's so much more! I have yet to taste the simple, heavenly joy that is Hawaiian shave ice (not "shaved," just "shave"), but thanks to Kathy Chan's photos and descriptions of this refreshing treat, this simple combination of frozen water and syrup is the one food I want to try the most when I visit Hawaii.

Mmm, that looks good! Here in Costa Rica, we have something similar - they're called "copos," and are shaved ice with both powdered milk and condensed milk. We eat them all the time, but they're easiest to buy at the farmer's market and in downtown squares. Delicious!

I feel like driving there and picking one up. It's so hot today.

We were in Hawaii in 2000, and made it our mission to find the best shave ice. We found it in Kauai, a place with 100+ flavors. I miss Hawaii!
