Increasing Portion Sizes: 20 Years Ago vs. Today

20080515-portionsize.jpg

Food portions today are obviously larger than before, but by how much? Look at these pictures of food portions from 20 years ago next to today's versions; it's like comparing a kid-sized portion to the adult counterpart. Except that was the adult-sized version. It's not necessarily alarming to see, but might make you think twice the next time you go for a large Starbucks mocha or bucket of popcorn.

When I was growing up McD's advertised:

"Hamburger, fries and a coke, with change back from your dollar".

This was a lunch or dinner for an adult.

The sizes of all three were the same as are in a current Happy Meal for kids.

Nitpicky point, but... true, the bigass burger wasn't available at those places 20 years ago, but the smaller sizes still are. In fact, in a lot of cases, the smaller sizes are actually smaller than they were back then (1/10 lb now vs. 1/8 lb then). Except for the coffee (difference in tastes AND portions), the rest are very legitimate comparisons though. And a little scary.

Won't someone please think of the children?!
