Serious Sandwiches: Is There a Better Condiment than Guacamole?

With the all important Cinco de Mayo holiday less than a week away, my thoughts turn to using the day as an excuse to transform ordinary sandwiches into lessons in excess. For example, adding guacamole to every single thing I eat. From a sandwich standpoint, is there a better condiment than guacamole? In fact, I can't think of many sandwiches that couldn't be improved with a giant spoonful of guac.

Here are some of my favorites.

Tortas

If it's Cinco de Mayo and you're talking sandwiches with guacamole, you have to talk about the torta (which really just means "sandwich" in Spanish). All the good ones are topped with avocado, onions, tomatoes, and sour cream—or as I like to call it, deconstructed guacamole.

The Cheeseburger

With spring upon us, we are very close to prime grilling season. What rule states that you must only eat guacamole with chips? If there's guacamole provided, you are obliged to top your burger with it.

Hot Dogs

See Above. Millions of South Americans can't be wrong.

Turkey Sandwich

Turkey sandwiches are boring. Turkey sandwiches topped with guacamole are exciting. Turkey sandwiches with guacamole and bacon are divine. Which brings us to...

Any Sandwich with Bacon

It's tough to say that guacamole improves bacon—bacon being the perfect food and all. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that bacon improves guacamole. Indeed it does. Indeed it does.

Guacamole (or just some sliced avocado smashed into the bread) on a chewy roll or toasted whole wheat with tomatoes, red onions, alfalfa sprouts, roasted red peppers (or ajvar), pepper jack cheese (or meunster).

Breakfast torta -- refried beans, eggs, and guacamole.

Cold roast beef (rare with lotsa salt), red onion, tomato, cheese, avocado/guacamole.

Avocados are on my top-five list of best foods ever. I could go on and on and on.

And on.

Guacamole sandwiches are good.

I love tortas.

Guacamole is great on hamburgers and turkey sandwiches.

While we're on the topic of guacamole, I was wondering if someone had a really good recipe. Having just recently moved out to the west coast it seems to be as ubiquitous as ketchup.

You don't need a recipe for guac! Mash a couple of ripe avocados with cilantro, lemon or lime juice (I love it with key lime, but I'm from Florida), and, if you like it chunky, add diced tomatoes or onions. Some people add a tablespoon of mayo to make it creamier, but I don't care to.
Actually, I can't eat guac at all anymore, not for about two years now. I developed an allergy to avocado. I'm sad.

Nice ripe avocados, garlic salt, lemon juice and black pepper. Add ingredients to taste. Yum.

I like to leave mine a little chunky, the super creamy stuff reminds me of the stuff you get from the store. Some folks may add onion, but I think that overpowers the avocado. Some people may add tomatoes, but I think it makes the guac too wet.

Guacamole is also very good on hot dogs.

I like making guacamole with lemon instead of lime juice and I put a lot of chopped onions and tomatoes, garlic, pepper.

I second the hot dog vote.

Nice crispy hot dog, almost burned, toasted bun, guac, shredded pepperjack cheese.

In my opinion, guac is not guac without tons of cilantro.

Avocados are a staple in my home. One of my favorite combinations is wheat toast with avocado and grey salt, arugula and home grown tomatoes. I recently made a guacamole recipe from Williams Sonoma that was delicious and Rosa Mexicana in NYC makes a killer guacamole.

Guacamole, grilled onions, and salsa - the BEST burger of all time.

My guac recipe is: ripe avocados, minced garlic, minced shallot, minced jalapeno, lime juice, and a few tablespoons of prepared salsa (because I don't like raw tomato). To the purists, this is probably wrong on many levels, but to each, his/her own.
