Serious Easter Artisanal Chocolate Egg Giveaway

20080317-johnkira.jpgWe at Serious Eats love all the food traditions associated with Easter, but we must admit there is a special place in our hearts and in our stomachs for chocolate easter eggs.

So we have undertaken an extensive search for great chocolate easter eggs, and we have found some at John & Kira's, an artisanal chocolate-maker from the Philadelphia area. I have been writing about and eating their terrific chocolates for years now, and I know how much love and care goes into every piece of chocolate they make. So we're excited that John Doyle today has graciously consented to letting us give away a box of 36 hand-decorated chocolate Easter eggs filled with delicious 64 percent Valrhona dark chocolate ganache.

To enter to win, just tell us here in the Comments section what your favorite Easter or Passover food is. One winner will be chosen at random today, and the winners' eggs should arrive in time for Easter. And if you don't happen to win today, you can try again tomorrow or order chocolate this week from John & Kira's and receive a 10 percent discount by using the promotional code serious1.

The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply. Comments will remain open until noon ET tomorrow (March 20, 2008).

Already salivating for ham, homemade bread, and cinnamon rolls.

matzo ball soup!

Coconut macaroons for Passover.

Any chocolate from John and Kira's!

Italian baked egg pie

roasted lamb on a spit, greek-style with lots of garlic. hands down.

Fresh ham - not smoked!

Tradition is it for me. . . simple roasted leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary, roasted new potatoes and asparagus or green beans. And of course, chocolate eggs!

um... the eggs

kielbasa... (which obviously tastes better with a little holy water sprinkled on i!!)

Dark chocolate covered matzo!

easter chocolate

Sour cream and cucumbers - cucumber sliced paper thin, salted, rested and then drained, added to an equal parts mixture of sour cream and Miracle Whip (shut it!). Allowed to sit in the fridge for a few hours before serving.

Oh dear, I want that now.

Devilled eggs

Ham baby, ham...

meat. lots of meat.

matzo brei, with strawberries.

Stale Peeps! (and hashbrown casserole. It might not be Easter, per se, but I make it for every holiday)

coconut macaroons.

Ham raised on my parent's farm.

i've got a weak spot for the marshmallow Peeps...regardless of color or animal shape. But the best part is opening the package and letting them get a little stale for a day or two...then they're nice and chewy!

even though i don't celebrate easter (it's Passover for me), i have a strange love of the Cadbury mini-eggs. my boss and i call them 'crack eggs'. Can't stop eating them!

Oo, mint jelly too. Not so much the lamb however...

chocolate malt ball egg thingys :P

Candy, candy, candy!

Easter sushi! Rabbit sashimi!

Gefilte fish with horseradish! And charoset!

Lamb and asparagus. Followed by chocolate.

Homemade poppy seed and nut rolls from Polish Grandma's recipe. Two types - (1) regular and (2) type for lactose intolerant nephew. Poppy seed "butter" made from scratch.

I can never resist Cadbury creme eggs. As a child, I used to get the large ones in my Easter basket. Now, if I can help it, I try to only eat a few of the minis, which are super addictive. It's probably best that they're only available around Easter!

My family (I grew up in Texas) was never into lamb at Easter, but as an adult through friends I became introduced to this tradition and now I love it! Roasted lamb with mint sauce, yum....But I love chocolate bunnies too.

Wine & chocolate.

My mom's challah!

Since I have different food every Easter, I'd have to say I love the candy, especially Cadbury creme eggs.

Peanut butter filled chocolate eggs!

jelly beans

gefilte fish with the red horseraddish!

Fresh horseradish

Lindt's dark chocolate Easter bunny and Cadbury's caramel creme eggs...

Chocolate Malted Eggs.

I really adore our family's traditional charoset - applies, raisins, honey, sweet wine, cinnamon. Very simple but you can eat it all week.

Another popular item is my vegetarian matzoh lasagne. My temple has started serving it at our Community Second Night Seder.

And there are too many others. I love the challenge of Passover cooking!

Deviled eggs!

A nice lamb stew... mmm....

Vosages Chocolate Bunnies

lamb and chocolate!

Every Easter, I would rush into Nonna's appartment knowing that there would be a large tray of struffoli on the table. It's an Italian dessert made of fried puffs of dough dipped in honey and Nonna would make it just for me every year.

To this day, it is still one of my favorite desserts, probably because it brings back such great memories.

cadbury mini eggs

chocolate eggs, jellybeans, more chocolate eggs....

chocolate crunch eggs call my name

Deviled eggs. So many deviled eggs.

Chocolate Malt balls!

shrimp and grits

Matzoh ball soup... mmm.

Chocolate! If I don't win one of these I'll have to console myself with something from Sahagun.

Warm and steamy hot cross buns for breakfast!

Easter ham! :)

the extra large Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs and then there's ham with brown sugar glaze and pineapples on them.

A solid white chocolate easter bunny that I can spend all day working on!

today I am loving Dove truffle eggs.

licorice jellybeans

hard matzah balls

Matzoh ball soup! Good all year round, but best at Passover. Ditto for gefilte fish. Charoset is a good Passover only choice.

Deviled eggs.

Reese's chocolate eggs

eggs in any form

Mmmm. Deviled cadbury cream eggs? :D

How about something simple: tart, flavorful jelly beans!

Deviled Eggs.

Matzo ball soup!

Hot cross buns! When I was little, I loved to peel the little custardy stripes off and eat them first.

Mmmmm.... Italian Ricotta Easter Pie.

Fried matzo...smothered in real maple syrup. Mmmm...yum!

Hmm...today I choose the molded orange jello salad ring filled with ambrosia salad that we pretty much only make at Easter.

The small Cadury Creme Eggs that come in a little carton of six or eight? Just enough sugary goodness.

greek easter bread with nutella

solid white chocolate bunny

Love glazed ham. Candy-wise I am into Cadbury mini-eggs. YUM!

I don't really associate a particular food with Easter, other than the candy in the Easter basket-- so, chocolate, I guess!

So is candy a food? For Easter - YES! So chocolate candy it is!

It's crazy, I know, but I love to have Cadbury Creme Eggs at this time of year. Major sugar buzz. Then I have dyed hardboiled eggs to bring me back down to earth.

Cadbury Robin's Eggs and Peeps

Today I'm going to say...egg salad leftovers afterward. On a sandwich. With chips.

Lamb with mint jelly--yay!!!

Ham with brown sugar glaze.

Although I am a chocoholic this is the time of year the peeps come out. Of course now they come out at different holidays, I only eat them at Easter. Silly. I know. But sometimes food (even junk food) is more special if it is saved for a special time.

Scalloped Potatos

My favorite - only the best chocolate! It's the one holiday when I really splurge! And I DON"T share with the kids!

my favorite easter food is CHOCOLATE AND COCONUT BUNNY CAKE!!

Rosemary and garlic marinated lamb chops with English-style vinegar and fresh mint sauce. Forget the chocolate bunny, I could eat that all Easter long.

Chocolate, Chocolate and more chocolate

Thanks for this giveaway. I love Baked ham and chocolate covered coconut eggs. Thanks so much.

Chocolate chip pancakes, it's a family tradition

My Mum's roast Welsh lamb studded with garlic cloves and rosemary. That and British style hot cross buns but not on the same plate. However, it's been a number of years since I've eaten that because she lives in the UK and I live in the US and I can't buy Welsh lamb here.

DOVE truffle eggs

Butter lamb - not the tacky kind made from a mold. We make them by hand out of a stick of butter. Then we "sacrifice" it to toasted Paskha bread!

You know, there's nothing like a piece of matzoh with just a little butter... so simple, so good!

I love Hot Cross Buns at Easter timee.

spiral cut ham with sweet cracklin' glaze for sure and of course, gotta love jelly belly jelly beans and the original yellow chick peeps (its so fun biting their heads off)

I said hard boiled eggs yesterday, but today I'm feeling peanut butter chocolate eggs.

Maltese Rabbit Stew (Stuffat Tal-Fenek)

I love paska.

My favorite are robins eggs with the malted milk and chocolate inside and the CHALKY candy coating in bright speckled pastels on the outside. To be eaten you must lick the outside, rub the color on your lips, and then put the large egg in your mouth to be slowly dissolved. This was something of a religious rite for my sister and I every Easter. Of COURSE the rite has been passed on to my daughter who now firmly believes that her mother is certifiable! She does agree with me though, that the peeps (2nd fave) must be eaten stale.

I look forward to potato-cheese casserole with dinner, and our traditional dessert: devil's food cake with 7-minute frosting, green coconut "grass" and jellybean "eggs". Thanks for the offer--I adore chocolate!

I don't know the proper name for it but the mortar from the passover plate. It's a paste made with grapes and some other delicious things. It was so much better than the bitter herbs. I guess I should paid more attention and I wouldn't look so stupid.

I love the cadbury eggs. I never get enough of them during Easter.

The original cadbury eggs. Yum!

I like leg of lamb with mint jelly

Hershey Chocolate Eggs, like giant m&ms!

We always made a Bunny Cake when I was a kid. I loved eating the bunny's foot. It had more frosting.

Coconut cream eggs

For real food, it has to be honey-baked ham, but for candy I love Smuckers Puckers jelly beans. They are sour and yummy and you can only find them this time of year, so I usually stock up (but I haven't found them this year, so they may be gone for good).

I have always stocked up on cadbury eggs at easter, but they make my cavities hurt now.

I love green bean casserole. we only have it on Easter.

My favorite Easter food is not so much a food as a yummy treat - Kinder Eggs! They are the most amazing chocolate eggs from Germany. They are banned in the US due to the small contents in the inner eggs but when I am able to get my hands on them it is like heaven. :-) Lisa Elliott ( lisaellliott[at]cox[dot]net )
