Doughnut Muffins: Two Great Breakfast Foods in One

Photograph taken by Lori Baltazar
I must thank Lori of Dessert Comes First for introducing me to doughnut muffins, or muffins that (kind of) taste like doughnuts. I'm also wondering why I've never heard of them or seen them before—does anyone sell doughnut muffins? Sure, I could follow this recipe, but then I'd probably eat them all. Thus is the hazard of baking. I'll just admire Lori's baking prowess for now.

If you ever get to the Boston area you should head to Pie Bakery in Newton Center... they have fabulous doughnut muffins!

The author of the doughnut muffin article in Fine Cooking, Kathleen Stewart, runs the Downtown Bakery & Creamery, Healdsburg, CA, where doughnut muffins are served.
I've made a muffin recipe similar to the one mentioned, but the ingredient quantities are slightly different so I can't say that the end result tasted like doughnuts. I might give this recipe a go because I'm really curious to find out if these do taste like doughnuts. They look good. Thanks!

These were all the rage a few years ago:

Can you believe Heidi's been doing this since 2003?

@morningbun and MelsDiner: Thanks for the info! I hope there's a place closer to me with doughnut muffins though. -_-
@guido: Damn, what was I doing in 2003 if not eating dougnut muffins?!
...Oh my god, now I remember: I was on a diet.
Fail.

Nigella Lawson has a recipe for Jam-Doughnut Muffins in her book, How to be a Domestic Goddess. I haven't made them yet but this reminds me to get on it!

Thanks for the recipe link! I've been obsessed with trying to make these since eating the (far more cutely named) duffin a few months back.

These are in the updated "Joy of Cooking", right?

I found a recipe similar to this before -- it was called French doughnuts! (A random recipe on a CD called "Millions of Recipes" that my parents gave me.) I made them about three years ago, and they turned out tasty.
