In Videos: Pounding Mochi

videos-mochipounding.jpg

Pounding mochi, or cakes made out of glutinous rice, is a traditional New Year's activity in Japan. After the jump, watch these expert Japanese mochi pounders alternate hitting the mochi with a ginormous wooden mallet and turning and wetting the mochi by hand at breakneck speed without smashing any human bones. Wow. Just wow. I don't know if there's anything more to say. That was truly impressive!

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why making mochi at home is such a pain in the rear. Or hand, as the case may be.

jaysus. I wonder if worker's comp covers mochi masters

chopped up mochi with frozen yogurt = heaven

Awesome! I love mochi so much....mmmm!

I loved watching ddeok-making demonstrations [ddeok is mochi's Korean twin] when I lived in Seoul. They were just this quick—but, since most of the ddeok-makers were elderly men and women, their speed was even more impressive.
