In Videos: Space Food Sticks TV Commercial

videos-spacefoodsticks.jpg

In the 1960s NASA asked Pillsbury to help them develop an edible food snack that American astronauts could conveniently eat in a space shuttle. The result of their efforts resulted in a glorious example of space food technology...which was then reformulated for the non-space-traveling public and aptly named Space Food Sticks.

Watch the commercial for Space Food Sticks after the jump. And be sure to watch it all the way to the end; the last 3 seconds are awesome. [via io9]

I love the astronaut putting the Space Food Stick into his helmet hole.

I love it when it says Pillsbury! It makes me feel so excited!

You can still buy Space Food Sticks in Australian supermarkets.

Only 44 calories per stick!!

44 calories per stick! Wow. Guaranteed to get you through a rough space day doing strenuous space activities!

The precursor of the Power Bar?

The orange flavor was the best!

Wow, I remember those. Now that I ponder it, they looked lot like the Pup-o-roni I give my dog now.

I remember my mom bringing these home one day. We were ecstatic! She never ever bought anything we saw on tv so it was quite an event. I also remember them tasting like dog food and being greatly disappointed.

They can be had at Dylan's Candy Bar; only in peanut butter and chocolate, I think. Still awesome!

Did you see this one, also on YouTube?

oops, tried to embed another video...it was another commercial where kids blast off into space after eating another brand of space sticks. Nice special effects for 40 years ago

Man, I loved these. I was about 9 when they came out. SO TASTY. I liked the chocolate--they were like an acceptable version of Tootsie Rolls.

Wow, powerbars in the sixties I guess! :P

I remember them as being chewy, but not tasty.

oh, i loved these!

OMG! Had completely forgotten about these!
I loved them too - especially the peanut butter.
