In Videos: Honey and Clover: Japanese Stop Motion Intro to TV Show

videos-honeyandclover.jpg

The opening to Japanese anime series Honey and Clover has little to do with the plot of the series (a group of art students figuring out what to do with their lives), but it features food being arranged and animated in creative ways as a homage to stop-motion animator Jan Švankmajer. After watching the Honey and Clover intro, check out Švankmajer's surreal films. [Thanks to John for the heads up.]

Nice homage, the Honey and Clover intro.

It is like day and night though - like uptown/downtown (or like downtown used to be), like Madison Avenue vs. a cold-water flat in a place being bombed.

Thanks for the link, John.

I must have caught that thing where I can't make one post that doesn't need to be followed by another in explanation again. Forgive me.

I was referring to the comparison of Honey/Clover to Svankmajer.

Oh wow, thank you. I love Honey and Clover with a passion. Passion that made me cry throughout the last episodes of each season. It's my favorite anime series from these past few years. :O

If you wanna see weird, check out season two's intro. Same artist: YUKI - Fugainaiya.

@Karen: Glad you liked it! They're two quite different things though, yessss...

@Allen: Oo, it has your seal of approval! Perhaps I will watch an episode. And not just the intro. ;)

Aaah, hachimitsu no kuroba! Awesome series that most of my friends only know by the intro. heh. Season 2's OP is fairly interesting as well. Speaking of which... I need to watch Season 2 yet...

There is a little bit of a food motif in the series; very minor, but amusing. I'd agree with Allen that it's a really good show. I was a bit skeptical at first, but after all the goofiness of the first couple episodes it turns out to be quite moving and a bit profound.

Ahaaaa I like Karen Resta's comparisons. My description would be "one is very Czech, one is very Japanese". Hers is a bit more poetic. :D

Oops, not sure what happened there. But what I was trying to say:

I love Jan Švankmajer. When I was studying in Prague, I checked out his food series from the library and became obsessed.

Sounds like an anime I need to check out!

Svankmajer was a popular artist to screen in my animation classes. His work creeps me out....
